Rear Drum Mystery

I have a 91 Z28 with the L98 with rear drum brakes. I was reading through the posts and read that due to a factory problem in 1991 that G92 cars that were supposed to get rear disks instead got aluminum drums. This makes sense to me, but I have iron drums (J41). I'm the third owner, but still have the window price and option sheet. So, I know that these weren't optioned on or that the aluminum ones weren't deleted. I was puzzled by this combination and was curious if anyone had thoughts on it or explenations.

FYI I also have FE2, GU5, and G80 codes.

Does it say anywhere in the information you got with the car that it had iron drums stock? It wouldn't take much for a repair shop to swap the drums to iron and keep the aluminum drums for that dirt racer G-body they have sitting out back...

I'm sure they came with the car because I have option code J41 which turns up BRAKE SYSTEM, PWR, FRT DISC, RR DRUM, CAST IRON in the RPO decoder on this site. I'm pretty sure that their was no mention of it on the window sticker, though I'll look again this weekend. Thanks for the help.

David

PS- I got a scanned pic of the sticker that has all the option codes on it if that would help.

your car is correct, my 91 was the same way. for whatever reasons(mainly weight differences) base tpi camaros (and some L98's) got iron drums while the alum drums were on base tpi Pontiacs. GM had a shortage of brackets or something to that effect and did not put the discs on every L98 Z28. I have know 4 cars to be this way from the factory(drum brake L98/iron drum)

Ok, thanks for the info. I've heard that the Al ones weigh about 5 lbs less (per drum) than the irons, so I guess it's not that big of a difference. Now you can say you know 5 of them this way.
