is a 91 trans am for 1700 bucks a good deal?
ok here the details. i am carless and came across a 91 ta for 1700 bucks. the car has a 305 tpi/auto, and t-tops. the hood is black primer. broken driver side GFX, missing a key lock, and a dent in rear quarter, but no rust and good paint. he said the interior is seats ripped and nasty carpet, which i have a grey carpet from my iroc. i dont no the miles. the car looks nice from the pics. i thought i would buy it and use as my daily driver. maybe fix up and sell. if i get into this car can i make my money back maybe more? i think its a deal but im wondering if you guys do. thanks
If it's a real Trans Am and the TPI runs good and the tranny doesn't slip too bad and if it will pass smog, take it! Hell, just the TPI engine and spoiler alone are worth almost a grand in good shape I'd think....
I agree. Authenticate the car, buy and restore it. I just bought my third f-body yesterday (91 WS6 T/A). It is an 80k car in VGC. Seller was asking for $5000, I bought it for $4000. These are great cars and getting more scarce. Be careful. Before I found this one I went through three fakes (1-GTA, 1-T/A, 1-Formula).

I'd buy it in a heartbeat...that style is so hard to come by. I agree, document and restore it. It will be a keeper with TPI and t-tops...
Man all you guys keep saying restore. I was just thinking it would make a good beater for that price. It's sounds like it's too far gone to restore plus there are alot more around than you think.....
LOL if you think that cars too gone take a look at my serious project car...
1991 Firebird base model, door dings in every body part, the paints falling off the car, the exhaust was hacked up, rusted out, and the cat was gone, the injectors were bad, the injector wiring was bad, the VSS was bad, the TCC was bad, the transmission was bad, the interior was trashed, the cupholders were gone, the radio was gone, the foglight switch was gone, the front GFX were gone, the windshield is/was permenently scratched from a bad wiper... Do I have to go on? At the time the price wasn't bad, it booked at $4500... that was a year and a half ago, whats it worth now? $1000 in perfect condition?
No car is ever too far gone for a resto, its just a matter of $$$.

Car: 1991 Trans Am
Engine: 305 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
I have a 1991 TA, i got it for $3,800. I got it when I was 18. The really neat thing, is when the car was for sale by original owner, I was almost 16 and my mom drove me by the car, and then told me, "No way will you ever have a car like that." Less than two years later, I got it. I have had it for 2 years and 2 months and I love it. I was wondering how rare it is, you say there were 4013 91 TA's or something like that made. Where did you find this?? Also, how can I find out how many are just like mine???? I have a 305 TPI, 700-R4 auto tranny, WS6 and it is all original, motor, tranny, etc. It has t-tops and power mirrors, locks, and windows. It has aluminum drive shaft and the beecwood with medium green metallic paint.

I got my numbers from PHS. They seem to be right about other years, so I trust their numbers.
OK, production numebers on T/A's for 1991:
3,452 Trans Am's
555 Trans Am 'verts
6 Trans Am 1LE's
Total: 4,013
This number does not include Trans Am GTA's, Canadian Trans Am's, or export Euro Trans Am's.
These I believe to be the most accurate prodution numbers available and I have them on my website. I've gotten these from about 5 different sources and these seem to be the correct #'s. I will just about swear by these until somone show me proof backed up with credible references pointing to something else.

Bottom line, if a car has no rust on it, a full restore is exactly what should be done, as long as the car itself is all there... you see where I'm going. @ $1700 I'd say it's a good deal for any car with less than 125-150k on the clock.

Now I'm questioning how much I payed for my 91 GTA L98..
I payed around 5k$ for it, 100xxx miles, damaged fender ground effects on both sides, bad starter, and a leaky T-top..
But it runs and it's better than walking since I wrecked my 92 3.1 ;>

I just found in the locl auto hunter a "low mileage" '91 T/A 305 TPI, WS6, t-top car, supposedly "mint" for $4,850...
If I didn't need a goddamned FWD winter/commuter car, I'd be all over this one...
