88 Iroc-Z Convertible
88 Iroc-Z Convertible
Hey guys, just wondering what everybody's opinion is on this model. I've never owned a convertible of any kind... I have however owned a 88 sport coupe which I fell in love with.
The Iroc-Z is fully loaded with a 5.0 TPI/ T-5 tranny. Borg Warner rear end and all wheel disc brakes. The car is jet black with the decal delete option. The owner has recently replaced the top as well as the brakes and other minor additions. The car is, in my opinion, in good condition and he's asking 5500.
What do you guys think?

Well thirdgen convertibles basically put the hardtops and ttops to shame from a cruising enjoyment standpoint. As a daily driver the noise would get to be annoying and the benefits of the convertible top wouldn't really be all that noticable. The price you were quoted is very reasonable. If you have the money go for it. Just keep in mind convertible specific parts are hard to find and expensive.

I'd take it for $5k if its mint...I found a gorgeous '89 IROC vert just like that for $5k firm last spring...
If he won't budge, take it anyways! Nice verts are harder to find every day...

.....what, why not?! Anyway, $3400 for mine. Yes Windnoise SUCKS......I am hoping that a new tops will help solve some on it....WTF did ASC design it with those gaping holes buy the windows, or is that just the top?

That sounds like a good real iroc. $5500 should be about the max for a really nice iroc Convert. So make sure that the paint is real nice. Take off for any scratches, KBB for a well optioned 1990 iroc with 100,000 in excellent shape Private party in in richy northern california is $5370. I'd say if it is excellent then $5000 would be a fair price. If you see any components of the convertible that don't look right, are missing tell him you know those are expensive and try to take it off for that. However, a 305 tpi convertilbe leaves a lot to do. Much easier to convert to a 350 unit then a TBI and lots of power. Plus, the T5 can be converted to a T56 if it ever goes and you'll have a great looking car that's fun with some good pontential for power. Try to get it, if it's in good shape you'll never find anything that cool for a while.
LOL Around here $5000 wouldn't get you a decent Iroc hardtop. Book values on these cars really don't mean much anymore. The book values assume the car is beat to **** like 90% of the thirdgens on the road. When billy bob with his daily driven rust eaten Iroc runs the book value the price is going to be accurate. For most of us that baby our cars and take good care of them the book values are going to be low. If you can get a deal, good but don't expect it.
I had a guy come up to me in wally world asking if mine was for sale, told him nope and how much i bought it for and he was like,

Sure made my day......

It's the same around here. If it's an IROC and the guy wants 6,000 or less, the car is basically trashed. Either a daily driver or in need of total restoration. The book value means very little.
Bought the Iroc on friday for $4500. Like I said it has 107,000 miles on it but feels like it has 7,000 miles on it. The guy kept it immaculate... you could probably eat off the engine. As for the body... it's in great condition. The interior is where the work is at. It's not like it's completely ruined just not the way I envision it being. Basically the seats need to be replaced. The carpet and console is in perfect condition. He has a 50th anniversary nascar shift **** that needs to go... actually I already ordered a new one but I can't seem to be able to get the old one off. If you have any advice on that let me know. Anyhow excited as hell to have it. I plan to post some pics later.

Ill buy one right after I get that black 88 SS monte for a drag car and the new Honda VFR bike I want and the EVO VII lancer im buying as a daily driver (when they FINALLY get released here), oh and a t-top GN would be cool too.......................
