Is this a good price?

91 RS, 305 carb, 5spd, straight body, flaking paint, decent tires.

colorado owned, 2nd owner, asking $3k.

i put 100 down tonight & am taking it to the mech tomorrow to make sure everything is cool. he says trany is fine but at high way speeds on a very intermittent basis there will b a very fast loss of power.. all electronics remain working, just a quick loss in power then its back on. he said the shop he took it to when it 1st started couldnt figure it out.

also, what about upgrades? inparticulary a tpi? can this 305 except a tpi? or maybe a supercharger? whats avail? difficulty? xpense?

thanks for the time.

It seems a little pricey for just a plain jane RS but it's not out of line I guess. As for the cutting out at high speeds, it probably just the speed limiter kicking in at 125mph or there abouts....

Never mind, you said high way speeds, not high speeds, my bad

The price doesn't sound too bad, it'd be fine if all you're looking for is a semi-dependable daily driver. If you want to go fast its about the last place I'd suggest starting. A 91 RS with a V8 is going to be TBI or Throttle Body Injection. The problem with tbi is that its not designed for maximum performance. Yes you can bolt on a TPI setup but its not extremely easy. And keep in mind that the TBI fuel delivery system isn't the only bottleneck. On TBI cars EVERYTHING is a bottleneck. The manifolds, exhaust, cam, heads, gears, etc all are designed for reliability/durability rather than performance.

If you want instant performance save up about $5000 and buy a 90-92 L98 fbody.

duh.. i feel like a retard.. i didnt know they didnt have carbs & i just saw they aircleaner under the hood... so i assumed carb. after reading a little last night i saw that it was TBI

miles.. 88k, sorry about that 1 too. i thought i put it in.

& although i already bought it today, thanx for the replies.

i did a quick run down again today, heater, lights, carbon in the tail pipe, etc.. then i took it to a mech for a prepurchase inspection. it had some things wrong w/it. biggest were the clutch fluid was extrememly low (weird, cause it shifts fine.. if my old fiero was even 1/4 low it would shift like crap, if at all) & the ignition is off a bit. no big deal. i got it for 2500 after i showed the guy that.

so if i find the time to fix everything myself im looking at a few hundred bucks or if i take it to a shop about a grand.

& yes, it needs to b dependable now, as my brother will b driving it most of the time... but next winter after my 4x4 is done i would like to make it go fast (low to mid 12s in colorado)... & handle better... so u think if i want that i should start w/a different platform? any old threads come to mind about turning what i have into a 350 TPI beast?

i have had my eye out for a while for a nice 3rd gen with a v8 & a manual... ive found several nice irocs, z28s, etc.. that i would have bought in a flash.. if they were not automatics.

thanx again.

What you'll find is that in stock configuration, at sea level, a TBI 5spd runs around 16 seconds in the 1/4. Probably closer to 16.5. You can add gears, headers, full exhaust, high flow cat, heads, cam, and a carb or TPI and it'd run better but it'd still be a long ways off from 12's in the 1/4. Nitrous or a blower might get you closer, but ultimately you'll probably want to swap in a built 350 and either upgrade to TPI with aftermarket parts ($$$) or swap to a carb, then the stock T5 will start to be a liability, as will the differential. So figure a T56 or swap to a 700R4, and a 12 bolt or 9".

On the other hand, you can pick up a 90-92 L98 or 93-96 LT1 car that will already have larger manifolds, 3" exhaust, better gears, better cam, better heads, etc for about $4000-6000 and run low 14's, add a few significant mods and be in the twelves. You can take a look at the TBI board here and find a large number of people that will say TBI is the greatest thing ever, but notice that not many of them have any proof that it can perform.

i'm sure it's a decent car in all, but after reading a few of your posts i would say definately stay away if you can; keep looking.......sounds like alot of problems just waiting to happen and if your budget is only alowing for 3000 your going to be introuble when things start hitting the fan. plus for pennys more you can get a z28 with a tpi.

i'd stay away and save for a better model, but it's your choice........good luck with what you choose.

Engine: 5.7 TPI in both
Transmission: W/C T-5 in both
Axle/Gears: B/W 3.27 in both
may be an after thought

i would change your fuel filter. My IROC would cut out on hard accelleration. It would just shut off, then with the engine down, the fuel system would catch up, it would reignite, and BANG!!!!. Needless to say 3 of those back fires and my then "dealership new", just bought the car, DYNOMAX muffler was bent in half
NO KIDDING!!!
Good luck, SHAGGY
