Looks like an awesome car!!!
Some things to note the car has rear drums, it was the only way you could get an LB9/A4 and I want to think T-tops with a Formula.
Also notice it has a GU5 3.23 with G80 "Ltd Slip" Saginaw gear...

Beautiful. The best color combo offered on the Formula....I think. Don't think it will get anywhere close to the asking price. You need to take that car to a BJ, Mecum, etc auction.

The owner mentions "standard pace car engine mods" I don't notice any mods in the pictures. if this was a pace car wouldn't it also have some external identification, lettering, light bar or something?

They may have just put a Light bar on top which would have included a switch and some wireing...

for that much money you can take half - spend it on a remodel - and with the other half build you can to look just like it.

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
I definitely like the color combination. I'm not normally a fan of two-tone paint, but I like the lower charcoal treatment with stripes on a yellow Formula.
I recall that Pontiac used an identical looking car in a lot of the Formula advertisements when they came out in '87.
If it were a 5-speed (or an L98) I would be all over it -- but not at $30K+.

Yes, but there's no way to reproduce the fact that the car only has 411 miles on it. That is what will get him the big bucks, IF he gets them.

Boy, that is one pretty bird. Ill say it again..To get the money he is looking for he needs to take it to one of the major auction houses. Tom, makes a good point. If it was a 5 speed or L98 car the activity would probably be greater. Still, a great looking car. IMO that s the ultimate Formula color combo.

I just realized it has the front bumper bracket

I hate those things... they can completely distort the bumper... I really feel sorry for you who live in states that mandate a front Plate....
It is really a steel for $10K I am this close to bidding on it but I agree if it was a 5 Speed I too would be all over it... As it sits, it has the peanut cam

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
John,
You are so right about the front bracket. My Formy vert had it and fortunately it didn't distort the bumper but i do have 4 holes that now need to be filled in along with having to re-touch the paint where it was rubbed off. I will probably just wait till i get her repainted next year.
She may have the peanut cam but with only 400 miles on her she still will garner a lot of attention & looks at your local car shows. Clean, well kept 3rdGen's are a rare sight.
Question for you John...She is a 87. Are the door panels correct? My 88 vert has the "old style" firebird door pulls and locking panels/interior handle. [camaro/firebird] Yet, this Formula has the newer style.

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
It was a 1987 thing only, There were three seat levels from 1987 - 1992. You had the basic seat, the Custom seating (as seen) and the Deluxe Seats (ultima or GTA)
In 1987:
Only the Basic seats got the plain door panels
Custom & Deluxe seating got the plastic molded door panels (as in pic)
in 1988 & 1989
Basic and Custom seats got the plain door panels
Deluxe seating got the plastic molded door panels
1990 + (it may have been 1991 +)
All seating got the Plain door panels (to save money)
My second Formula is exactly like that car, but it is a 5 speed, it has rear disk brakes and a 3.42 gear, but otherwise Identical for options...

Here is a 7K mile
Notice there is a difference in the stripe... Not sure why either...
I am wondering if they may have put the wrong decal on it in the factory. The stripe should be Orange/Charcoal/Black It appears to be Red/Silver/Black The low production number may indicate that they may have not had the correct stripe in stock when the car was made... It would have been made within the first week if not weeks of 1987 Production...
Honestly I like the red stripe better than the Orange...

Thanks for the info John. Now i understand. That would be a fun color combo to repaint my vert next year. It would be expensive with having to do the engine bay and the trunk/doors...But fun..

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
The more I look at it there seems to be something else that is really fishy...
Notice that the miles are 411... That is all and fine and very possible... Also notice that the title on the bottom (last pic) shows 411 miles as well... That would not be all that strange except the fact that you would rack up some miles by simply moving the car around. It should have more than that. So THe TITLE from 1987 also states 411 miles....

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
Well, he does say this "Car was made 8/86 and used as a pace car until 10/20/87 and then bought and stored since"
It is possible that the car sat in one place all this time and was never moved until recently but you can't see the 1/10's on the odometer I guess his "drives as any new car" would be a couple of tenths put on it to pull it out of where it was stored.

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
I wonder if the fuel injectors are clogged up... I winder why he changed the pluggs and wires... It does not make sence to me honestly, unless it was running rough...
My 89 was that way, someone went through the entire ignition trying to fix the rough idle, Because it was not run much, it is actually the injectors are so fowled out...

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
I have the same issue with the L98 in my IROC. I really only drive her to the car shows during the summer & for the most part she hibernates during the winter.
Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
That red stripe is not correct for an 87 yellow gold. I own a 9k mile L98 yellow gold car and it should be orange. Factory did NOT paint them red. Actualy, the stripe was not painted at all. It is a stripe decal that is applied around the entire car. It is orange/black and is applied on the border where the painted grey portion ends. Also notice the light grey line in between the red and black stripe. That should be the same color as the lower grey portion of the car. Not sure what went on with this car in particular, but those colors dont look correct. I would be interested to know if the red/black stripe is painted or a decal. If it is painted, you know something fishy went on as GM never painted them.
Here is a pic of my car...you can clearly see how the decal was applied and what the correct colors should be....

, That is a reason I didn't make him a offer, either it have been painted and striped, or it was early production and only stripe available, which I don't think, it was the first thing I notice in the picture, both of my '87's have the same stripe as your's.Very nice car I must say, it can be a twin to mine, but my car has the 305TPI with the 5-Speed.

Re: 411 Mile Yellow Formula ebay
I cant imagine GM made the stripes in more than one color. Every yellow car I have seen through the years have all been orange. Though I have not seen many! First time was in 92 or so when I came across a yellow L98. Was too rich for my blood back then so I had to walk away. Ever since then, the search was on for that elusive yellow L98. Took me about 16 years, but I finally found one. I have seen only a hadful of 305 TPI cars and all had the orange stripe. If you look at the GM promotion photo for 87, you will see a yellow L98 car. It also had a yellow stripe. Something is not right with that one on ebay. At first I thought the photo resolution was offm but then I looked at your pics here and the color looked the same.....RED. Plus, there was that light stripe between the red and black. If you look at your car, you will not see that. Also, I am no expert on pace cars, but I have not heard of these yellow cars used as pace cars. I could be wrong here....just am not aware this was the case. And what exactly are pace car engine mods??

If the car is as original as stated it may be that the factory ran out of or did not have any or mistakenly put on the wrong stripe. Keep in mind these things were not done by computers, there is a level of human error that happened in the factory. Just because it is not suposed to be that way does not mean that the car did not come that way from the get-go.
The stripe IS correct for 1987 but not for a yellow car... It does not change the chance that it came that way from the factory tho.
