With recalls, a stealership can't refuse a car based on car. There is no "expiration date. GM still has to honor a recall repair, regardless of age.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

I went to my dealorship today. I showed them the car and the seatbelts. A mechanic who had been there for a "long time" said they never recalled camaro seatbelts only corsica seatbelts. That convinced the service manager and I was left standing there with no further advice given. Does anyone have any letters or anything that proves what cars are recalled or is there no hope?

Re: Seatbelt Recall

IF you go to the NTSA website you can actually download the entire thing. They have Letters to Dealers, What cars are affected etc... Serial Number ranges the whole deal... Just page through it or print out the whole thing and go from there...

Where? Link? looked through the site & found references to it, but nothing specific as showing a VIN range.

And actually, you want the nHtsa, not just NTSA....WAY different site!

And hello...But I've read the ENTIRE thread. I've searched NHTSA......I can't find anything more than the Campaign #.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Stephen, I did a search and found the PDF. It is a collection of documents from several parties over this Seatbelt recall. It's actually 109 pages. Try right-clicking this link and saving the document:
http://nhthqnwws112.odi.nhtsa.dot.go...-90V105-NN.PDF

Then open the document. As I said, it's 109 pages. It does include the
"range" of VINs convered.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Well....My 87 VIN doesn't fall within the range, yet I don't have the metal clips, like my 89 seatbelts do have the clip.

Maybe a previous owner swapped the belts out already? Yet put some in, that are not "fixed"?

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Well since i had the Pontiac customer care center set up my apt. for the recalli figured everything would be ready to go today....

Of course that was not the case. So.... This morning i went down to my local Chevy & Pontiac service Center. ( of course taking the morning off work ). I get down there 10 mins. before my apt. Everything was going ok at this point. I go inside and talk to the customer rep. they get my car checked-in and that was the last thing that went smooth....

( I had Pontiac Customer Care stet my appointment for me on the 16th. Remember this )

8:50am I figured I would see how long it will take to replace my seatbelts. The lady said she would try to get it out by the afternoon. Ok i Guess. I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they might have been busy. ( Although 4 i repeat 4 seatbelts to be replaced only will take 15 - 20 mins. )

12:00pm No call yet.
2:00pm Still no word yet
3:45pm I figured I would give them a call to check the status.
The lady said she would have to give me a call back.
4:50pm Finaly i get a call back saying " I can come and pick-up my car and schedule a appt". I ask why i need to schedule a appt? Her reply " We will need to order your parts. they are a special order item". WTF? It took 8hrs to tell me i need my seatbelts replaced and they don't have the parts on hand? 12 days have passed since my apointment was scheduled. Why weren't my parts ordered knowing i was coming in for a OPEN recall. So needless to say i am going to call there customer care again. GGGRRRRRRRR!!!

I am going to get a hold of the dealers CEO and give him my ! How can they call this customer service? WTF?

Re: Seatbelt Recall

So I see a ton of information regarding the seat belt buckle buttons, but not much regarding the retractors for the seat belts. The ones in my 89, all 4, simply do not lock up. If I were ever in a collision I'm certain they would not do any good. I'm tempted to just take mine apart and try and see why they are not locking up, it's not like I can make them any worse right?! Does anyone know if there is a rebuild kit available for the retractors, NOT the buckles (before everyone jumps on me for not doing a search). I'd like to know more about this and any way I can get it resolved. Thanks all

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Why do you think they do not lock up?

They should not lock unless you exceed a set number of G's or percentage of G's. If you hit your brakes really hard they should lock. Some cars they worked differently but that is how they are supposed to work on our cars. There is a weight on a pendulum that catches on a gear that stops the belt from unspooling...

Re: Seatbelt Recall

I said that because I have been in other cars, also gm cars, and I have been able to make it lock by tugging on it quickly. Not the case with my mine. If it works on a pendulum then I will have to wait until the car is back on the road to test it out and make sure. Thanks for the info.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

AFAIK the mechanism does not work in relationship to the spinning speed of the spool. I have found that sometimes if I park on a steep hill (going down) the belts will lock, otherwise it never seems to make a difference how hard/fast I pull on it.

Heck you live in San Fran, you should be able to find a hill or two and hit the brakes to see if they indeed lock...

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Ah the joys of working at the dealer myself. I don't have to deal with anyone telling me the recall does not exist. I tried going into a dealer a few years ago and they said there was no open campaign on my car. Now that I work at the dealer its a different story. Not only did I get the retractors replaced on my 83, since the 83 retractors were discontinued I got them replaced with brand new 4th gen units.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

I went to 3 dealers with the recall paperwork and they all ran my vin numbers (I have two Firebirds) and told me that they were either done or the recall is no longer supported by GM. After going around in circles, I just ordered the replacement latch kits, you get all 4 for about $8. GM wins, it's more hassle than it's worth.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Chevy stealership sent me to a Pontiac stealership (for my GTA. Same cars, but whatever...) And the Pontiac stealership disputed the "not official/just an internet print out" paperwork, saying my VIN didn't quality.

I so wanna find a place that will do it, take the paperwork to that Pontiac place & rub their noses in it. But they wouldn't care....No $ came out of THEIR pocket so........

well if they refuse to fix it get them to give you in writing that the recall does not exist or has been done or your car dont meet the whatever to have it done

then when/if you ever get in a wreck and the belts fail, you can own your local GM stealership

Re: Seatbelt Recall

For anyone wanting to buy the kit to "update" your seat belt buckle buttons, the GM Part number is 1#14097930, as as of this writing is still current and available. The kit is about $7, and includes new red plastic buttons, springs for the buttons, and a stainless guide reinforcement for mid-89 and earlier. You can find installation instructions for this kit on the top of the previous page of this thread, and a single kit does all 4 latch buttons.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

I got lucky and found a nos set of latches for mine last week at a GM dealer in PA. I had the recall done on mine in 95 and they managed to break the passenger side front belt and said that they couldn't replace it because it wasn't their fault that the plastic was old and brittle and that the belts had been discontinued and weren't available anymore. Funny that I found a set 14 years later with in 5 minuets of looking for it after I finally found the part number, but the dealer searched the country and checked with GM and said none were left.
If anyone needs a set let me know, I can see what I can find.

How much did those run you? The car im buying is an 87 T/A and the belt latches are broken, well all the plastic is broken off, it would be nice to find a set no hassle, even though im fairly good at getting recalls serviced at dealerships. I dont take no for an answer lol.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

I found the kit on ebay last year after I spent 45 mins on the phone with someone at GM corp. I had the 109 article for the campaign, they told me that the campaign ended 10 years ago and I was out of luck.

I bought the repair kit on ebay and looked up the Kent tools used in the recall only one of the 2 tools are available and its the one for installing the springs not the pull to get the guts out of the buckle. I tried a local Chevy deal in Akron Oh to see if any of the old timers would have the tools to do the job and what it would cost. They never called back.

Any one know were to find both tools??

Thanks

Re: Seatbelt Recall

No matter how hard or fast you pull on the belt will it cause it to catch. There are weights in the mechanism that will lock the belt. I have found that in some cars simply by driving down a hill can cause them to catch, it depends on how it is situated in the car. Just because you cannot force it to lock does not mean anything. Do not go nuts over that.

Both tools are still availible. I ordered them earlier this year. KM might only list one number, but both tools will come when you order it.

The campaign is not expired. I just had both retractors repaced on my 83 also earlier this year. It took a while because GM VIS does not go back that far and they had to dig through hordes of paper work. I'm not sure if they actually found records on my car or they just gave up. Either way, I got brand new 4th gen black retractors since the third gen retractors have been discontinued. I work for GM, so that may have helped. About 5 years ago when i first read about this recall, and before I worked for GM. I got the run around from a different dealer and they refused to do it.

Yeah. Safety Campaigns don't ever expire.

I had a Chevrolet stealership give me the run around on my Pontiac, then sent me to a Pontiac stealership. Who put NO effort into it. After arguing, I got the Manager called on me, who threatened me with the Police. "Leave or....: waving his phone at me.

I left them some really nice black "ribbons" on their parking lot, on my way out.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

I can't find a dealer willing to help me with this, and it is very frustrating because both front seat belts are broken.

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Just buy the parts for about $5 and do the repair yourself. It took me about 10 minutes to break out the old buttons and put in the new ones. The part number is #14097930

Re: Seatbelt Recall

Government Agencies are hardly ever friendly, what did you expect?

Yes it ticks me off that GM is now owned by the Government, and no I will not be buying a new camaro or any other new GM car, nor any car with Onstar, until the govt gets out of the car business...

Re: Seatbelt Recall

the dealer i go to for things i am not capable of doing myself know not to replace my seatbelt retractors as i like the way they lock in place and dont choke the crap out of me. i wish my 2003 silverado seatbelts would lock. i would prolly wear the damn thing if they didnt strangle me while i was driving.

anyway the point of my post was to comment on GM and individual dealers. i do business with my local dealer because they treat me decently when i go in for work or parts and do a good job of finding obsscure parts discontinued parts and do so in a timely manner. mileage varies a lot from dealer to dealer as it is more the people working at each place. i am no fan of GM but im not going to punish the local folks by with holding my business from them when the government could care less if i did business there or not.

the current government is not interested in helping anyone but themselves hold and maintain power and the whole purpose of taking over GM was to ensure the union vote for obama acorn and the democrats in the next election. they arent interested in who does business with them or what statement anyone makes in regards to buying from GM or not.

so if you buy a car wearing an obama shirt and swearing fealty to the king and his court or not they dont care. he is going to subsidize the auto workers union regardless of sales or what the peons do or buy or dont buy. so im not gonna punish the folks that work at the local dealers because some socialist ***-clown took over their employer.
