locked steering column

locked steering column

Can anyone out there explain how to remove a keylock for the steering wheel in an 88 Iroc ? mine was working fine. turned the key back to lock, now it wont unlock.

both of my camaros had the same problem. you most likely need to buy a new key switch(tumbler). you need to get a steering wheel puller, that would make it easier.

got the wheel off, stumped where to go from there... will a haynes manual help or would I be wasting my time ?

if you've never done it before then go for it, otherwise you can do it, the tough part is gettin the B*tch A** steering wheel back on while getting everything in.

did you remove the lockplate also?? you need a steering wheel puller and lock plate remover. lock plate remover pushes down on the plate so you can take the ring that holds it in place out. then it's as simple as removing a screw that lets the tumbler slide out and the new one slide in. Just don't lose the screw down the steering shaft.

If you dont have the lock plate tool it is almost impossible. You can get it at Sears or most automotive parts places.

Autozone will loan you one for a deposit that you get back when you return it. Once you get past that part its cake. You have to remove that blinker assembly its like 3 screws pull it back enough to expose a small black torx head screw on the right side just under the lock cylinder and pull it all the way out and boom your done.
