ran across this. I know its on a C5 vette, but some rearview mirrors on thirdgen f-bodys are like the one in this link.

thats not bad. mine is mounted the same way, except it is on the top of the mirror, and the radar detector is hard wired with the wires hidden by the head liner. and the fused switch is on my shifter plate panel. so when you want it on, just flip the switch.

Thats neat but I definatly wanna get my detector out of the site of the 5-0 when they pull me over they are extremely illegal here and most cops will pull an "Obstruction of vission if you have one". By the way can you suggest a reasonably priced detector?

I have not bought one yet, but my friends have. You get what you pay for. They all had the most expensive one offered at walmart.

I would rather have it mounted on top of the mirror too, more out of sight from smokey.

Cool idea. Something similar could definitely be done with the mirror with the maplight in my GTA.

I have been thinking about getting a Beltronics RX65. They have good reviews and prices should be good since they are being replaced now by the RX75.

I have a better idea. I've been dinking around with this idea for a while, but wasn't able to find a detector thats right for the idea.
Basically I was thinking of incorporating the detector in the dash.
Mainly taking the detector apart. having the sensor and everything upfront in the bumper opening or such, with the read out in the dash. I think that would be the sweetest set up. The problem is that the display is soldered to the detector/motherboard itself. I've been looking for a detector that has the display connected with wires. From there, I'll just elongate the wires, have the motherboard always on, hook up a rocker switch and use it to turn on, hard wired, detector on with a flip of a switch.
Its complex, but once I draw it out, you'll know what am talking about. From there I want to have 2 detectors one in the front and one in the back with two different read outs. That way I know where the signal is coming from. If I happen to get stoped, I'd turn the detectors off with the switch.

with a very fine tip soldering iron, you could de-solder the display and use very small wires(like 26-30 gauge, if you need wires that small) and then just extend those wires to whatever length.

The sensor should be in the middle of the car though, i think, about where the rear view mirror is to get the full 360 degree detection.

This is the easiest way, and quickest to remove when parking, that I have come up with. It is one of those nonslip "sticky" pads for cell phones that are sold everywhere. I then wired it up to the fuse panel on a hot with key, junction on the fuse panel. This way, if I leave the detector on the dash, it's off, but when I start the car it comes one. And to hide it. I just unplug it and throw it in my pocket, under the seat, in the glovebox, ect. Can't get any easier, and it stays put.

valentine one radar

if you guys want a radar detector that will save your a** then buy a valentine one. my friend has one in his turbo eclipse, and they tell you how many radars there are and where they are located around the car. it has a display that has 4 arrows and it tells front back side to side and how many boggies there are. they even go one better and tell you that if you ever get a ticket, no matter the price they will pay it. definetly worth a look.

My Camaro has the detector in the middle on top of the dash with the wires running under the dash and my Jetta has it right above the rearview mirror. I like the Jetta better but both are hard wired so when the car comes on so does my radar detector...I'm lazy!

If your driving at 60, and the cop is driving at 60, then you and the cop are getting 1 mile closer ever 30 seconds, and you want to slow down before he can see you, so do these things have like... 1-2 mile range?

They may not be 100% preventive, but mine has saved me on quite a few occasions. And considering the cost of a ticket and insurance is more than the cost of the radar dectector, I figure it has saved me over a grand in court cost and insurance.

Good radar detectors like the X50, V1, and RX65 do. They can actually pick up radar @ 2.5-3 miles, and around corners, and over hills...

Its very tricky to mount my radar detector for the reason, I can't have it flush to the dashboard because I have a 3.5in scoop on the hood and I can't mount it too high because the laser sensor is on top of the detector...I actually mounted it higher on the windshield and hardwired it to the map/dome lights. My T/A upper console came with the full set up, dome light, map light, flashlight, and counters. Also there is a small pouch hanging between the port for the flashlight and map light. When around the cops I just remove it from the windshield and put it in the pouch. But my main accomplishment is I also wired the the crappy .5watt speaker to a beefier 2+watt outer speakers (by Creative, normally used for electronics like ipods, cd players and laptops) Because I kept getting pulled over and I would never hear the radar detector going off because of the music and the t-tops being off...
