roll cage fab

i was wondering if anyone fabed up a roll cage that the front bars run down the A piller location replacing the space with the bar running next to the dash. for the top bar, has anyone removed the headliner to make an attemt to hide the bars. on my dad's 92, the roll cage is certified to 8.50 but the fab wasn't planned out because the car was a daily driven subsidised police car. it ran a best of 8.83 at 143mph but the visibility around the bars is terrible especilly with a 2in scoop. so if anyone has tried to hide and tuck the bars away may i please see some pics....

Mine...

Don't quite know what you mean by "down the A piller location replacing the space with the bar running next to the dash"
My front bar is completly behind the dash.

Are you planning on keeping the headliner? Depending on how the cage is fabbed, if they weld it in place like mine was done, there will be many burn holes in the headliner IF it doesn't first catch fire Headliner was the one thing that was ditched no questions asked. I notched my interior panels and was able to get the vast majority back in. The ones around the side windows were not able to be squeezed back on.

I autocross this (future roadrace) car and the visibility is great compared to some I've sat in. There isn't the a-pillar, then *GAP*, then cage in your line of sight.

Dash and dashpad needed some minor trimming, and as you can see from the first pictures the side tabs the dash bolts to were cut and welded to the cage. I was able to keep the defroster ducts, the rest of the a/c ducts were removed. I got rid of the a/c (but kept the heater) a while before this was done.

It's an '86 Z28

Wow...I like that cage. Nice job. I love how clean it looks. Ive been wanting to build a cage for when I re-do my iterior. However since Im 6'4 and i have T-Tops...Im alittle scared to order a kit and not be able to easily fit it so it looks clean. The main hoop is what is giving me fits.

Is that a bolt in cage? May want to check and make sure it's legal for whatever class you run in or may run in. Also check on the allowed number of mounting points, my cage for CMC allows 8 in specific locations. I know drag racing has a bit of a different take on cages than road racing. The way that cage is designed looks as though the rear half is well built to handle high horsepower, yet the front seems kinda flimsy with no cross bar, no firewall bars and low side impact bars. As I said, that may be fine for drag racing, I don't know. Just something to be aware of.

I bet he's referring to the vertical A-Pillar bar. The dash butts up against the door when closed, so how did you deal with the fitment? Trimmed the dash pad, to fit around the bar? I seem to remember a cage that was availabl or custom built years ago, the the tube stopped just above and below the dash, but with a flat bar connecting the two. I can't seem to find any pics as an example of what I'm referring to.

Same here. At 6'5", I'm leaning towards the center mounted dual bars, one on either side of my upper console. Not up to track specs, but I only run with a local autox club, so it wouldn't really matter. I don't have t-tops, but don't want the roof line effectively reduced by 2", due to a cage bar. I figure 2" by a small gap between the roof and the bar (1/4"), 1.5" tubing, then another 1/4" for clearance.

Re: roll cage fab

What did you do to your dash to make it fit for the roll cage? I just had a very similar roll cage welded in and I am about to get to the dash install.. Was wondering what others have done, and maybe some pictures would be helpful!

Nevermind...

I should have looked at all the pictures.. You cut off alot of that dash.. I guess I could just use a hole saw or something similar and a slit to get this to fit very well.. Any Ideas?

Re: roll cage fab

He made some weird locations to weld in the roll cage, but he does alot of roll cage work for Ford installing roll cages for the Milford proving ground, and he did alot of work in the 80's for the 3rd gen IROC races, He welded the main hoop and the rear bars going into the trunk right on the unibody " frame " I will take some pictures to the box that he made to secure the main hoop which I believed was over kill, but If I get the procharger the corner where the back of the door windows and the rear of the t-top will thank me by not cracking..
