Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

I've got a '92 Z that came with the Delco/Bose system, hush panels, but no floor courtesy lights. So I bought an original wiring harness for the lights...plug on the drivers side, orange/white wires, 1 socket/bulb on each side. I was told all 3rd gens have a socket to plug this wiring harness into on the drivers side near the fuse panel. Well, I can't seem to find it if it's there.
First question/request....could anyone who has these lights be so kind as to take a quick picture of the plug where these lights connect to on the drivers side?
Secondly, can anyone confirm that any '91-'92 Camaros actually HAD these courtesy lights????

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the link James....I've actually been through that thread before and posted in it asking the same question....no one in the thread was able to confirm that any '91-'92's actually came with the lights from the factory.

Because the drivers side hush panel was different on the 91-2 models the plug may not be there. If that is the case on those years, all you would have to do is get the right connector and splice it into the wires that go to the door switch (the one that turns on the overhead light)

HI,
The Hush panals were standard on the Firebirds and was included with deluxe interior on the Camaro.
I remember driing an 82 Camaro that did not have the Hush panals. The Firebirds did. Popup headlights and the Hush panals were two of the reasons that I purchased the Firebird.

My car doesn't have the floor lights, I really wish it did. I had some white neons under the dash that were only wired to a switch that worked well but I removed them because the wires were in the way and I couldn't figure out how to hook them up to come on with the dome light and I didn't want to run an always on source and to the door switch ground.

If someone knows where the positive wire that goes to the dome light is, I would be very grateful.

Its not positive(+) that you are looking for.

I believe the wire is white and its grounded by the switch in the door jam whenever the door is opened. I know this because I installed an alarm system in my 82.

Remove the driver side kick panel. look underneath the dash on the left hand in the vancity of the fuse box, you should see orange and white wires running to an two pin connector. The floor lamps are plug into this connector.

Orange is positve(+), white is negative(-)

I don't remember seeing a connector like that under there when I was doing the harness for my power accessories, unless I missed it. I did see a connector with a blue wire on the passenger side though, any idea what that is for?

Makes sense. IIRC, the wires running to the dome light are orange and white as well.

I didn't even notice that you had an 82. Well there has to be some kind of plug somewhere under there, the hush panels have the holes for the factory lights and they changed the panels for 90-92 so there must be a few lone 90-92s that have the lights.

The following link is for an 86, but it might prove useful:

http://www.geocities.com/vtcamaro/Pi...rams/pg200.jpg

In the above diagram, there are two C237's (Blk 8917548) (Socket Half) behind the I/P left of the steering column, this according to my 85 shop manual.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

My 92 Z28 did 100% have interior floor lights. I really wish I would have known it was a rare option befor I sent it off to be recycled... I took the under dash panels out but left the wiring. Here is a pic of the passenger panel with the light cover still in place. I know this is an old thread but I thought it would be helpful. Here you go.

I think once the "map lights" came out on the rearview mirror, those cars did not have floor lights. All the 4th gens are like that and so is my 90 firebird. But I too want them so Ill rig up some led's perhaps . Sleeper_Z, that was a RARE option!

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

Well Sleeper and I found out this morning that adding the courtesy lights won't be that hard. The same 194 bulb socket for the license plate lights, driving lights on the tails, and the side marker lights all will fit perfectly into the holes in the hush panels. I'm going to go to the junk yard in a bit and grab a taillight harness from the one 3rd gen they have there. I won't have the lens cover like in sleeper's pic but oh well. I'm going to get some LED 194 bulbs for them and a 211 bulb for the dome light.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

I just got back from the junk yard and I snagged 4 bulb sockets and a "new" air bag wire coil (I broke mine when I was putting on the Grant steering wheel and someone already took it out of the steering column so I snagged it) all for $5. The 1990 Camaro looks like it was repainted a couple of time and none of those times it was done very well so all the wires back there were covered in paint and dirt and someone hacked off a few of the bulb sockets so I only got the two outer driving light sockets with 5" of wiring. Before I left I checked out the 1993 Camaro that was ransacked last time I was there and I got lucky that the wiring for the rear side markers was actually still in tact and I got those sockets with out 5' of wire! So I'm going to try those first and I have the other two for backups.

Did you hook em up? Im doing the same thing and want to know what wires do I need to splice into that will make them come on w/the dome light? I have a 2 wires, white and brown (from the door switch on the jamb) on the drivers side and just the white wire on the pass (door jamb switch thingy). I assume those are grounds? Cause in my car (90 bird) the orange wires are always "hot". If I splice into the brown and white wires will I be good to go?? Or do I need to find a seperate "hot" wire as well?

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

I didn't yet because the driver side hush panel doesn't have the socket plug like the passenger side does, just a hole where the light would go. What I'm going to have to do is go to the junk yard again and get a passenger hush panel and cut out that socket and glue it onto the driver kick panel.

As for the wiring, the best place is probably to tap into the wires coming off the door switch. Just put a test light to each wire coming out of the switch and see which one is hot when the door is open and hook one wire from the bulb socket to that and the other wire from the bulb socket to a ground.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

Well, Im finished. What a pain that was! I tried to tap into the door jamb switch lights, but no go. No juice from there?? Thats what me tester told me anyway. So I just tapped into the cig lighter (orange wire) and grounded to a bolt on chassis all hooked through a red LED toggle switch I installed under the fog light/hatch release switches. Fatigue started to set in so I will try the dome light setup another day as I had other things to do to the car this morn (changed side marker on Driver side.....went through the headlight! ).
I did not have stock harnesses so I used a truck red marker light from the auto part store ($4) and it came w/the bulb housing (194) including the bulb. I mounted them in the back, 1 side has the standard bulb/red lens and the other side has a 5 star LED (194) w/no lens. Will have to wait until dark to see what lights up better, and I will take pix best I can and post later tonight.

On the driver's side there's a plastic connector, then some wire into a bulb socket..then more wiring over to the passenger side socket.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

I stumlbed across this thread this morning. I have an 82 with the convience lights as a factory option. First, I recommend you save the wiring diagram JamesC posted. Just right click and "Save As" on your computer. I also took several pictures, as my hush panels are currently out of the car.

First the dirver's side door switch has two WHITE wires and one TAN wre connected to it. The TAN wire is used to sound the warning buzzer when the key is in the ignition and the driver's door is open. So you should not use that as part of the convience light circuit. Second the connector for these lights is located above the fuse panel. Note that there is only one connector for both the driver's side and passenger's side convience light circuits. Wire colors of interest are ORANGE (+12V) and WHITE (Ground).

If you don't have the C237 connector above the fuse panel, you can tap both the ORANGE and WHITE wires at connector C200. This connector is located on the left side of the drive's compartment at the fire wall. It is just above the carpet in my car. See the photo C200.jpg below. You can see the ORANGE and WHITE wires on the left cneter of the connector.

Next are two photos of connector C237. C237-2.jpg shows the part of the connector you should find above the fuse panel. Note that it has two WHITE and one ORANGE wire connected to it. If you look at the wiring diagram, for C237 you will see one ORANGE and two WHITE wires connected to it. (Note that JamesC indicated that there were TWO C237 connectors, based on the wiring diagram he posted. There is only one connector with 2 spperate connections to it.). C237-3.jpg shows the entire connector. The ORANGE and WHITE wires out the top center of the picture go to the driver's side light. The ORANGE and WHITE wires out the left center of the picture go to the passenger's side light.

(I will post the rest of the photos in follow on messages.)

Photos pass pigtail-2.jpg and pass-pigtail-3.jpg show the passengers side light circuit, outside the main wire bundle, above the convience center, to the right of the steering wheel. This circuit runs with the main wire bundle across the dash. You will probably need to pull the radio, etc. to thread your wiring acorss the dash. pass pigtail-4.jpg shows the passenger side light circuit, hanging about half way across the passenger's compartment, from the dash. (I have the hush panel and ECM pulled out currently.) Note that the pigtail reaches from the bottom of the dash to the floor.

The driver's side pigtail is about 6-8 inches long from C237. Photo drivers side pigtail shows the pigtail and a portion of the back side of the fuse block. Note that you cannot see it in this photo, but connector C200 is located in the top center, to the left of the cardboard square and bleow the PINK wire. drivers side-2.jpg is a close up of the light socket. Note that the wire colors are acutally WHITE and ORANGE/WHITE, not ORANGE as shown in all the wiring diagrams. I also noticed that for both circuits the ORANGE and WHITE wires were joined together, just like lamp cord.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Dave

Ok here are the photos of the passenger side wiring. These pick up under the driver's side dash, above the convience center.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

Thanks man! I should note that I think there will be some wire color differences since I believe the wiring changed in 85 and again in 90. I think I know which plug you're talking about, I have 3 wires that run down the driver a-pillar and there's a plug above the driver kick panel and then I guess it goes from there to the fuse box. That's probably where I'll tap into.

Oh, I think I was wrong about those wires coming off the door switches, they're grounds not +12v. If you want to use those you'll have to hook your bulb socket to an always on 12v source and then hook the ground to one of the door switch wires. You may want to use a test light for that first to confirm but I'm pretty sure that's what I had to do when I set up my keyless entry to turn on the dome light though.

If you look at the wiring diagram JamesC posted and the 1991 body wiring diagrams at this link you will see that these lights should be powered off the 20A ACC fuse. This is a ORANGE wire from 82 to at least 91. The WHITE wire to the door switch is the other side of the circuit and provide the path to ground at either door switch.

http://www.austinthirdgen.org/module...howpage&pid=22

To test the plug you describe above... 1. Are the wire colors ORANGE and WHITE??? 2. If yes, disconnect the battery and using an ohm meter, do you get ZERO ohms from the white wire at the plug and the WHITE wire at the door switch? 3. Do you get ZERO ohms from the ORANGE wire at the plug to the ACC fuse in the fuse block? (you may want to pull the fuse and check on the load side of the load side of the fuse. this will eleimainate a fasle positive from all the other circuits connect to the fuse block). If you answer YES to all three questions then you have the correct plug.

From the body wiring diagrams in my 82 service manual the part numbers for the C237 connector are car side, two WHITE wires and one ORANGE wire: 8917548, lamp side, two ORANGE and two WHITE wires, 8917545.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

Here are some pix. 5 star red LED (194) in each side under dash as well as map lights and dome (red LED's). Power went to orange wire cig lighter and ground is on chassis (may tap into door ground ((white wire??)) later so they will come on when opened) w/red toggle switch mounted above HVAC (has a nice glow when on). I used the housings of marker lights cause it was reflective inside them. As far as LED's go, they are much better than bulbs, they lit up twice as much and even light distrobution. Same principle would go for anyone wanted light under there....these came out a little blurry but you get the idea, choose your color/bulb style etc....

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

I got my courtesy lights in today! I had no plans to do it today, it started out just taking off the kick panel to look at the wiring and then I found out I could take the hush panel off without taking off the knee bolster and then since I already had it all taken apart I started seeing how I could run the wiring and then I got so far in I just had to finish. Still have to fab up a bracket for the driver side light but I just tie wrapped it in place for now. I also want to replace all the lights with some LEDs so they'll be white and not yellow.

I found out that the orange wire that runs the dome light is actually always on and the lights are all switched on by being grounded with the door switch. I tapped into the orange wire and then tapped into the white wire coming from the door switch.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

Compuwiz1937.....Obvious question, but for the sake of thoroughness, I assume that the floor lights will turn w/the rest of the lights (dome, map) on when the doors are closed via the "interior" light switch/headlight switch right?

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

10 years (almost exactly) since I started this thread and I'm getting back into the car. Like most here, life took priority over the car. Anyways - I found the courtesy light wiring I bought years ago (photo attached) and have been looking through the wiring diagrams in my '92 service manual and under the dash to see what's available in my '92. Just above the fuse panel in my '92 is a connector with the white wire, orange wire, tan wire, and gray wire which appears to go up into the dash to I assume the dimmer switch - I believe I'll end up tying into those.

Do you remember where you bought those light housings from or what you search to get them, I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

On some 92's at least, I believe the floor courtesy lamps mount to the top corner of the kick panel on each side. The light is attached to a plastic bracket, and the kick panels should have a little circular hole on the top corner where they mount. I'll try to post pics tonight.

Re: Those with underdash/hush panel/floor courtesy lights

My 84 only had the pass. side hush panel.
The left side courtesy light was mounted in a small bracket under the dash.
The right side light fit in a hole in the side of the hush panel.
Both were the orange and white wires and same wire as the dome light.

Here is a pic of the 3 different styles of the pass. hush panels:
