Hatch and hatch light Problems

I have a 1990 RS Camaro and ever since I have had it the hatch motor has been disconnected and or broken the switch to it works but the motor will not pull the hatch down. Also the brake lights that go across in a strip on the end of the hatch arent working and none of them seem to be burnt out, all fuses are good... Anyone have any imput on any of these 2 problems of mine? Help would be appreciated.

Hey there I had this same problem (I think) about a month or 2 ago. I went to open my hatch actually to measure some new subs I was getting or somethin. My luck ran out the motor got stuck so obviously I had to go elsewhere with my money, but my grandpa looked it over. Eventually we came to conclusion the motor burned up so we took it out, got some long bolts and moved the trunk up and bolted it in and it works as a manual trunk. I know im leaving alot out but he did it all im just tryin to remember, took about 3 hours or so. As for the light, I don't think it will ever be fixed for me, it comes on when the trunk is activated, since mine is stuck activated sorta the light is stuck on. So I just disconnected it, might put some neons back there eventually.

Hope this helps some. If you have any other questions leme know.

Matt

Two very seperate problems, For the brake light, you need to remove the plastic panel on the bottom of the hatch and inspect the wiring, looking for loose connections, corrosion, etc. If the fuses (and lights) are good, I think that's all there is to it.

The hatch motor is a whole different problem. Lonsal is the god of making these things work and his website Top Down Solutions will be able to explain in great detail what you need to do to make your's operable. If the switch is good but the motor doesn't pull down, you'll probably need to remove the entire unit and either rebuild it or replace it. Rebuilding is the way to go cost wise. Once again, Lon's website will walk you through removal of the old unit, disassembly, etc.

Look for information on the 1988-1991 pulldown unit.

Sorry didnt see u said brake light. Believe it or not I had that problem too haha. What my problem was the actually brake light conducter on the hatch wasnt touching the car. I put foil to conduct it, since there was thick dust over the metal part and its works fine. hope that makes sense, sorry

thanks

87TAairlineyard, and Rocketerz. You both seem to have had to deal with this annoying problem Ill check all the wireing for the break light, the hatch wouldnt bother me as much if it didnt bounce around so much when Im driving so I hope rebuilding the motor will work, I want to put subs back there soon but I want to get the hatch fixed so I dont have to take them out once there in.

I spent quite a bit of time and frustration getting mine back in working condition after it just went kaput. Just take your time with it, take some good pics of it before you disassemble, and use Lon's site. Keep us posted.
