gages and cruise control

not sure if this should be in the electronics but i thought more ppl would look in here.
lets say that i have a car with cruise control, and my gage cluster blows and i have to replace the whole cluster (all gages and plastic housing and the wire sheet and the VSS). the cluster that i buy came from a camaro without cruise control...my question is...will my cruise control work or do i have to find a cluster with the CC to make it work?

I have cruise. I've swapped out the original for a 110, then a 140. I've sold many clusters and never once has a problem of this nature arose. As a consequence, I'd guess, your worry is unnecessary.

The cruise control cluster housing has an optical pick-up on the back of it for the speedometer on 82-89 Camaros that must be retained for cruise control operation. Just swap the gauges into your housing, connector sheet if nessesary, and you should have no problems.

see i think thats what happened, i bought a cluster with no cruise control pickup, and my old cluster is gone (my dad threw it away). i think that optical pickup is the VSS. but i dont know if my VSS's are working properly and a new one is 100 buks (im cheap eh?).

so there is no difference in cluster housings? no extra wire on the wiring circuit?

Yes, the optical pick-up is the VSS input (it has the optical housing and 2 wires that go to a yellow connector (the buffer) and I cannot remember how they attach to the connector sheet. The housings and gauges are the same, I just don't know if there is a different connector sheet for non-cruise cars, I've only had cars with cruise control. I think I have a spare housing at home, I'll PM when I get home tonight if it has the VSS pick-up and buffer still attached, I may have trashed it.

There are 3 wires, unless there is a difference between 87 and 89. I have a picture with it installed when I put a jumper wire or two on to repair the mylar circuit board.

thanks murco, ive bought a few clusters myself in search of a good 240km/h speedo, but i dont have the origional cluster from my car cuz my dad threw it out and the one i got preceding that one makes my fuse blow so i cant use that one either. ive pretty much narrowed it down to this cluster thing.

EDIT: how easy is it to damage that buffer or the VSS? and if i did damage the VSS, would i get a code 24?

you have what? a cluster or a VSS? i can get a new VSS here, im a little weary about buying used electronics over the net...even in person actually.

I trashed the connector sheet, sorry, and I cannot find the pick-up/buffer assembly. These are pretty bullet-proof electronics as my car got hit by lightning 10 years ago and it's survived that along with various other "electrical mishaps" over the years. Getting a used one at a boneyard is cheap and worth a try, I don't know if you would get a code 24 with a missing VSS pick-up / buffer assembly (I would guess you would).
