85 iroc headlight switch

hey everyone. My 85 iroc's headlights were not working when i purchased her, but i was told that it tends to be the headlight switch that fails. I spent some time taking off the cluster to get behind the switch and remove it. I followed the https://www.thirdgen.org/gauges manual, which was extremely helpful .

However, once i threw the new switch in and tested it, i still had no luck. Even with the old switch, all of my turn signals, rear lights, interior lights, and dash lights work. But the fog lights and regular head lamps just don't work. The previous owner said that the lights were on and off until they just stopped. But they stopped in unison, not 1 by 1, so the bulbs still work.

In the owner's manual it says that switches have a breaker that will cause the lights not to turn on if overloaded. Is it possible that the switch is being overloaded? Or is it a good idea to suspect some corroded wiring somewhere? Are there any other ways to troubleshoot headlights alone?

I appreciate any suggestions, and i've done numerous searches on the forum, i havent found anyone with a problem exactly like this one. I'll take some pics of the switch and wires hopefully soon.

i just had this issue, it turned out that it was the high beam switch. if you try to turn the highbeams on, and you dont feel it click, that might be your issue.

Re: 85 iroc headlight switch

Check for any shorts or "Fubared' wiring in anything having to do with lights. I came out from school one night to find only my headlights worked. No dash lights, tail lights, interior lights, etc. After getting pissed off for a couple days, i found the front marker light wires had been cut at some point (before I had the car) and just wrapped back together. No tape, solder, heat shrink, butt conectors, nothin. Water got on there and shorted em out.

Re: 85 iroc headlight switch

i realized that i never said where it was, its not actually on the turn signal arm, its at the base of the steering wheel on the drivers side. its a connector, i believe it was white, and has three wires, and a cable going up the steering column

Re: 85 iroc headlight switch

ok i checked it out yesterday and it actually was the switch for the higbeams, right down the steering column like you said. An easy way to test is to jump 2 of the wires with a little piece of wire and your headlights will turn on, just like mine did!

Thank you so much!
