Cup Holder Teaser

Here is the cupholder from a 90 something tercel or corolla(I don't remember which one) I got from the junk yard (free) in the fall before it snowed. And the bracket I got made from a metal shop, 18 gauge is a little over kill but I know it will hold. I painted the bracket black on the weekend after I drilled holes in it. I will put it in this weekend and take more pics. I am going to put it under the dash vents in the middle. I am out of town right now in the hotel killing time.
It's the same idea as someone else from TGO did a while back. But their cupholder had a metal bar for the cups to sit on. If you serch cupholder you will find it.
I have a vert so on those hot summer days you need a bottle of water near by.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

Sounds cool, post pics once its in! I was going to do the same thing from a "cup holder tray" from a late 90's Galant, but then I got a 4th Gen center console so I have 4 now!

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

can't say it will look good but sounds functional... 18 guage is definately overkill. are you using a retractible system, pick a nice spring rate and you might consider magnets so that it doesn't fly out under fast speeds.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

That ^ is a good idea, I thought about something like that when I had the 3rd gen console, but I never thought there would be enough room to put a cup holder. I always thought it would hit a piece of metal or the shifter or something...pics?

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

How can you fit a cupholder in that area? I pulled up my center console and there was a whole bunch of wires and a big blue thing which I think is the airbag module. Is it just because my car's a '90 and has an airbag that I couldn't fit a cupholder there? THanks.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

idk my car is a 92 z28, i have an airbag also...

i pulled up the console to make suer nothing was in the way and i measured it so that it wouldnt hit anything and it didnt.

the blue "thing" on my car is below the cup holder if i remember correctly. its a tight sqeeze but the cup holder is about 3-4 inches deep and holds a 12 oz can of soda and a watter bottle with no trouble what so ever...

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

Thats pretty wicked. Do you mind if I copy that illuminating cup holder idea? The reason I ask is I've been trying to think of way to get light onto the center window switches, and using a drink bottle might just reflect the light enough to see the switches...

Have you ever bought food at drive thru to take home? If so how did you get your home without spilling them?

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

Cool install. I'm trying to come up with something for my GTA, but I'd consider that too far forward, for convenience. And my console has the power window an side mirror controls in it, otherwise I'd do the center console cup holder idea. No room left.

One of these days, I'll figure something out.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

cupholders are 4.50 at wal mart. Its called the wedge or something like that. It wedges in between the passenger seat and the center console. It works like a charm.

Cupholders are a good idea and everyone here's got a good suggestion.

I thought about it but decided I can make due without one. Don't want coffee / pop stains all over my lower dash, center console and carpeting.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

I took out the vents and drilled holes from the under neath then put small screws with nuts. You can't see them unless you looking for them. They work great.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

I've been toying with the idea of using a 3" port tube for a bass box, cut to length and seal the bottom, and install in the console behind the window switches. Fits a soda can perfect and already has a finished opening to cover any imperfections in the hole I'd cut out in the console. All I need to do is measure for clearance.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

You should look at conversion vans in the wrecking yard. They have cup holders that are like the bass tubes to hide the cut hole but already sealed in the bottom.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

Has anyone thought of the fact that '67 or '68 camaro's had those pick-up slide out ashtrays...and they sell the bracket at classic industries for like $5-$10...then for $20 you get the special cupholders for the '67/'68 and it holds two drinks and i can only assume would look great mounted under center vents and wouldn't block your guys' shifters or dvd decks or prob not even climate controls? Just a thought, maybe $25-$30 is a bit much for convenience, but all new parts and you don't need to waste gas searching for parts. Just my two cents :-D

I bought this, and it was awesome! ... Until the initial joy of having cup holders wore off, which was pretty much after the first day. The holders (it comes with two) are a bit shallow so stuff wiggles around. As you can imagine, anything that's full WILL spill. Not only that, but it does act as a wedge, which has left the side of my passenger seat a little pushed in, hopefully that'll just settle out. The only thing I have found redeeming about them is the rectangular slot where I throw loose change and my iPod. To me, though, the bad outweighs the good. Just my , though...

That being said, I wanted to find a solution to get rid of the wedge. I loved the ideas presented here, but I didn't want to cut into my console, I needed something cheap, and I don't have an easily accessible junkyard nearby, so I got creative. I bought some of those window well cup holders at Walmart for $2.00 and modified it to lay flat against the ashtray (basically just snapped off the vertical piece that goes into the window well, and with ordinary scissors cut a couple inches off the horizontal piece so it wouldn't get in the way of the ashtray lid). Planning to use an ashtray trim screw, I drilled a 5/32" hole in the plastic and mounted it on the bottom right/passenger side of the trim (T-15 torx screw, for reference). It certainly doesn't look stock, but it doesn't get in the way, it's not harming anything, and I didn't have to cut into the car. I need to pretty it up a bit (file down the rough edge where I cut it), but I did this just the morning and figured I'd post it up here. I attached a picture of the final product and more can be found here.

As for not having a place for my iPod anymore (having ditched the wedge), I believe I'm going to cut out the rectangular piece and replace the actual ash tray with it, since I don't smoke and it's serving no purpose. I'll post pics if I do.

Re: Cup Holder Teaser

hold on, wait a minute! that's WAY to simple. you didn't spend nearly enough time or money. i'm kidding of course. that's great. i once made a shift **** out of a door ****. took like an hour and cost nothing. it was a round brass **** with a brushed stainless looking finish i found on bay orderly when i was in the air force. i sanded down a piece of scrap pvc to where i could drive it into the **** and then sanded it down on the inside to where i could screw it down on the shifter of my 97 formula.

I put one in for a couple of bucks. It is aluminum from Boater's World. It's about 3 1/2" deep and fits a 20 oz bottle no prob.
