Steering wheel question

http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/Pr...ringwheels.jpg

Does anyone know what year and type F-body the bottom most steering wheel in that picture was equipped on. I'm interested in finding one and swapping it in to replace the GTA one I have with radio controls since I'm fairly certain you can't get the radio controls to work with a modern deck. That and I really prefer 3 spoke steering wheels.

Re: Steering wheel question

Kinda looks like the earlier (pre air bags) Trans Am wheel. The one on the top left I know is from a camaro, my 84 Berlinetta had one.

Re: Steering wheel question

hmmm, looked better in the small picture heh heh. I've never actually swapped a steering wheel out before, how do I know if a steering wheel will fit or not? Is it possible to use one from a 2nd gen like this one.

Re: Steering wheel question

the top left one sure looks identical to my 82 trans am one

you can put any gm wheel you want in it even a truck one the splines are the same on all gm across all divisions and years from at least the 60s to 90s years and all models

but whether it will clear the housing is another story

good luck

Sorry for my noobishness but can you eleborate on that? What do you mean by clearing the housing?
And do these two steering wheels look the same?

Re: Steering wheel question

top of the steering column housing

where the turn signal switch and steering lock plate and such are housed

the f body steering wheels have a longer skirt on the wheel hub than other makes and models

other vehicles have a really short skirt on the wheels

compared to these cars

at least the early birds do anyways

good luck

Re: Steering wheel question

Guess i'm going to have to do some research on whether or not a 2nd gen wheel will fit on a 3rd gen column.

I just pulled one of these off an 2.8 86 Firebird......... Can't tell you if it was stock but it appeared to be. The car was low mileage (70K) and everything else on the interior was stock and in real good shape. Most of the time I have found them on the GTA's; It's a leather wrapped wheel.

Hope that helps !

Re: Steering wheel question

That bottom is what is on my 87 GTA.

As for the radio controls, Crutchfield sells an adapter to use the steering wheel controls, with an aftermarket radio. I've heard some Alpines can use them like stock, but I dunno which models.

Re: Steering wheel question

A 2nd gen wheel will fit and look awesome (as long as we're talking about the Formula wheel standard on all Formula's and T/A's). Those things are expensive though, I've seen them go for over $200 on ebay in good shape.
