No key for my Trans Am? What's the best thing to do?
I just purchased an 84 Trans Am that was repo'd a while back. The title is good, but there is no key for anything. I need to move this car around to the back of my garage, but the column is locked. What is the easiest way to do get it to turn without breaking stuff? Also- can anyone point me in a good direction to get the parts I need for all new locks etc.? Any help would be appreciated very much! Thanks-

take a used gm ignition key and slip it in the tumbler and wiggle it around and it might turn the tumbler ... if not pull steering wheel and replace tumbler.

Since you have the title, go to your local Pontiac dealer and ask for a replacement. I was in the same boat as you when I got my car. Went the nearest Chevy dealer, got a new key for 45$. Then went a locksmith who made a backup for 25$.

But, his car is an '84 you cant get a key made with the VIN unless your car is a 90'+

Call a local locksmith and have him come out and make the keys for it, it may cost you more than a GM replacement, but it would have to get done either way. If your locksmith is worth anything it shouldnt take him more than 30min to make the ignition and the lock keys. If you don't want to do that I'd invest in some of those sliding wheel dollies, put one under each wheel and move your car around with ease.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Unfortunately, the dolly thing is out because I have to move it off the concrete in my pole barn out around the back, which is not concrete. Ughh- I have too many cars that don't run- lol. I think I could be the object of a Jeff Foxworthy joke.

My truck and camaro will use the same key... The sad thing is... Its completely warn flat... except for a very very small bump at the end...When i had a new key made at walmart they took a blank... ground it down so there was that very small lip... Works in both...

Pull the wheel, install your new ignition lock cylinder. You're gonna replace it some time, might as well replace it now and have a brand new ridge-ey key for it. Hawks has a Door, Hatch, and Trunk Box kit on their website, all matched keys I believe. Gonna pick up that set and match the new locks for my T-Tops to them, so I have the same locks all the way around.

Autozone sells ignition cylinders for like 15 bucks... comes with two keys...? Thats what Ide be doing. Screw locksmiths and $25 copies. As for the other locks (doors, hatch, t-tops), you can pick those up around too.
Or do what was suggested and order the kit...thats probably the best route to take if you can wait for it.

If you have not yet gotten a key or new cylinder, I would go try your local dealer, I got an 85 T/A for Free from one of my dads friends, he could not find the key, so I took the title to my local dealer and they were able to get the code for my key and cut me one, works great and was only 25$, def worth a trip could save some time.

I had the same problem but my car was a 92 so the dealer had the code because of the VATS. You don't have Vats so it is easier or cheaper I shpould say. In this order I would;
1. Call dealership parts and see what they say
2. Call locksmith and see what his price is
3. by the kit from Hawks if it is cheaper than sugestions 1 & 2 and if you have knowledge on changing the door locks. Ours doors area PITA to get to so beware. You will need all of the locks changed any way so a kit is the best bet.

Ignition key set at Autozone is $13 and they will rent the steering wheel puller and lock plate remover to you for free (with deposit). A locksmith is going to charge you a minimum charge (probably $40) just for showing up.
The door/hatch/t-top keys are a different cut and you can swap them out later with a matched pair from AZ or one of the others. They're not supposed to match the ignition key.
While you're replacing the ignition cylinder you can go ahead and tighten up that loose tilt steering....
