4th Gen Console differences (Manual/automatic)

Hey guys,

I've been reading up on the center console swap, going from a 3rd gen to a 4th gen and it seems that everyone is recommending a manual console over an automatic. My car is an 84 Trans AM with an automatic. Why would I want to get a manual console for it and what is so hard about installing the automatic consoles from the 4th gens? Thanks!

The shifter plate in the 4th gen console won't line up with your shifter assembly. Most people take the shortcut and go with a manual console to get around this problem. If I had an automatic, I would get the 4th gen auto console and relocate my shifter to line up with the center console. It might require some fabrication and trimming, but it'd be worth it to me.

I got the manual one because...yeah its easier. But, also because I knew that soon I was going to be sick of the auto and would be installing a 6spd. So I figured why fight the inevitable.

Either one will work...and the auto isnt that bad. Just take your time. It will be a lot of installing, removing, trimming, installing, removing, trimming, etc etc.
