homebuilt storage lid

has any built a rear storage lid locking or not? i have searched junk yards, havent found anything. my camaro i think used to have one but not when i bought it, it has a lip on the rear panel and two places under the carper that look like the lid would have bolted to. i was wondering more about how to go about make the part where it bolts to the car.

Re: homebuilt storage lid

i have never heard of a cover home made or not for the rear storage area. but here is what i would do. take a piece of foam insulation from home depot and carv it with a knife, saw, cheese grader, ect... untill it is the shape that you would want it. then wrap the foam in wax paper and fiber glass the top of it. you may want to put wood where the hinges will go. add layers of fiber glass and resin untill it is sterdy then sand smooth and use some body filler and spot puty to finish it. after all that you could paint or carpet it as you like. i dont know if that is the typ of cover you are thinking of but a hard cover for the rear is what i was picturing from the desciption above.

How hard could it be? The hardest part would be to cut out the shape you want, and to attach a handle.

I really like the foam idea, wouldnt have occured to me. A thin sheet of metal might also work well. Just use something easy like foam or cardboard to start.

Re: homebuilt storage lid

find one that already exists with hinges and everything. They aren't all that rare if you hit the junkyards frequently. I'll sell you one I have for $10 if you're near Buffalo, NY to pick it up. I wouldn't want to go through the hassle of shipping it though.
