Loose Steering Wheel?

Alright, I have read alot of threads about the "loose tilt wheel." I think i have this problem. However, it doesent really make sense.

What happens is, if the steering wheel were a clock, i would push on the 7:30 position and it would move about 1/2 inch. So normally it is straight, but if I push it can go to the bottom left area.

However, if I use the tilt control, the wheel goes straight up and down! So something else must be loose. I have never had any steering wheel off before, and have no idea how they work. So the steps to tighten "loose tilt wheel" dont make any sense to me.

Anyway, if this is the same problem we are talking about, how much would the dealership charge to fix it?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Loose Steering Wheel?

You just described the common symptoms. As far as what the dealer would charge, it depends on what the labor rate is and if they are willing to mess with your car. They may just run you off or quote you a very high price.

Re: Loose Steering Wheel?

It's a lot more involved than just taking the steering wheel off and putting it back on.

Re: Loose Steering Wheel?

I used the articles i found on google to tighten mine, its solid now, i reccomend searching on google and using the ones you find there. I also replaced the turn signal switch, and the steering wheel nut with a new GM and put a washer behind it to tighten it up even more, brand new now.
