rear window defroster

The rear defroster on my 84 TA doesnt work. When i press the button the light comes on and the wires are connected to the rear hatch shocks like they are supposed to be. Any idea why its not working?

Re: rear window defroster

get a digital volt meter (best alternative) or a 12V lightbulb from like radio shack or something and test the lead coming out of the driver side that first connect to the shock...check for 12V there after you put the gounding lead on the body...if you get voltage...proceed to the end of the shock and do it again...then proceed to the other end of the hatch same side of the shock, do it again...then go to the bottom terminal and check it again. Somewhere in there you will get a break...if it's not getting power at the beginning right behind the rear driver side seat...then it's a wire prob between there and the switch...if it's at the end of that shock somehow the shock is bad...if it's in the third location (passenger side shock closest to the spoiler) then it's somewhere in the window. if it breaks when you get to the bottom (towards the rear passenger seat) with no voltage then the passenger side shock is the problem, and from there if you get voltage down there...then there is a problem with the ground wire right there underneath the plastics. From experience i've never had problems with the shocks so i figure it's betwee then switch and shock, in the window, or the ground between body and passenger side shock. That should be a complete insight on the curcuit so if it comes back and it's between the switch and the bottom of the driver side shock then we can check a couple other things.
