I was replacing bulbs in my cluster last weekend, and I found that the gauge illumination lights are 882's, not 194's like I thought. They are halogen bulbs, and run like $10 each! I assume this is because it takes super bright bulbs to light up the digital panels. Has anyone replaced these with super bright LED's? Radio shack carries some that are around 3V each, so I think 4 of them in place of each 882 would work. It would cost a little more than replacing all the bulbs, but LED's never burn out, and give a whiter light.

Also, has anyone put LED tail light bulbs in a GTA with the driver information center thing? I'm wondering if it will act like a bulb is burned out, since the resistance will change.

 

Hey, where excatly on the panels are you trying to replace the lights on? I have the digital dash too on my 88 Trans Am. Few lights arent working anymore and im new to this digital dash with illumination lights.

 

The digital dash is backlit, just like any other gauge cluster. I bought a spare digital cluster from the junkyard, and it has normal 194s in it. I'm thinking someone put the 882 bulbs in my cluster. There are four 194 bulbs on the back of the cluster, one inside it and seven 74 bulbs on the back. I am going to replace them all with white LEDs, but I haven't yet found a local source for LED 74 replacements.

 

I know you said you wanted a local source, but oznium.com sells #74 LEDs.

 

i remember back in 1997 when i went to replace my dash lights i went to the pontiac dealer and i had such a hard time trying to get them he took awhile trying to locate the bulbs so i dont think they originally came with the 194's. 882's sound right. so where did you guys buy these by the way?

I Have e a question, What Does the Driver Information center tell you anyways? I dont have a Digital dash, I May want one...

And Does anyone have any Pictures of the Digital Dash's instrument Cluster, Id Like to see what the Driver Info center looks like

 

Swapping to a digital dash is a bit of a pain, it requires that you get the harness out of a digital dash car since its wired into everything.

Also the dash doesn't update very fast, so it looses a bit of the cool factor, but thats my opinion, some people love it.

 

I have access to a 1988 GTA with a Digital Dash.. Only thing is its been sitting outside since 2003 with the t tops off of it.. a tree is growing out of the hole where the transmission used to be, I am not sure if this will be any good anymore...

 

Water plus LCD equal not soo good. Wiring should be mostly okay, might have to replace some stuff though.

 

i also want to do something with my 83 trans am i like the cockpit style gauges but would like different background or light or something what can i do?

 

IT displays the odometer and on top it checks if the doors are open,trunk windshield washer fluid level, coolant level,headlight. etc. when you first turn on the car it checks everything and if everything is ok you will see the words "system pontiac ok" pretty kool, except when u freakin run into a problem like i did this month, Ill try getting a pic once i have it running again (the driver information display)
