hey guys.
i was at the junk yard and saw a gauge out of a 90 firebird 6 cyl. it had a 120 speedo,8k tack and 80 psi oil gauge. all the same as my 84 except the speedo on mine is 85mph. so i took all the bulbs and the gauge inlays thinking i will use them.but i have a concern about the speedo going to the 120 mark or will it stop at the 85 b/c i will still use the factory speedo gearing.
sorry if this is dumb. can u help me out??

its just better to swap out the entire gauge cluster... it should work fine then... but i'm not sure it'll work entirely because i think in 90 they switched to gear driven as opposed to cable driven speedos but someone will have to verify that for me

 

gear and cable driven are the same thing, the gear drives the cable, you're thinking of going from mechanical driven (cable/gear) to electronic (vss) not sure what year that took place though..

 

90 was completly different setup because of the airbag, its electronic. I think firebirds were the first electronic speedo i want say like '88? i could be wrong i know 90 and up F-body are all electronic speedo. I dont own a firebird but on a camaro its 1982-1989 are cable and 1990-1992 are electronic.

 

birds all had electric speedos from at least 85. I dont know if the 82-84's had mechanical speedos.

If you car, the 84 has an electric speedo, then the 90 pod will pop right in and work as it was intended

 

i don't care about the pod. my ? is will my fact speedo gear read to 120 mph.or will it stop. u guys are getting off topic hear,more or less.

 

nothing will stop the gear from spinning. If you could get it to work most likely it would just be inaccurate. If yours is cable driven and it isn't you will need to convert to a vss system anyway.

 

i don't think that u all understand what i'm asking. and i appologize.
all i did was take the gauge inlays out of the one at the junk yard out. i will still have my factory speedo gear. its like buying the white face gauges. they just give u the white faces to lay over ur originals. black face gauges.

No the whole speedo needs to be replaced...just putting an overlay over your existing speedo that is 120 instead of 85 will not work. Think about it...the actual mph will not line with the needle.
