Re: painting interior plastics,help
Interesting question, as I think I may do a little of that painting myself. I don't necessarily know the answer but have a few questions that may help:
Which plastic parts?
Did you use any type of primer?
What type of paint did you use?
How long did you wait between coats, and how fresh is the paint?

Re: painting interior plastics,help
What brand paintdid you use?
I painted my interior plastics for the entire car with gloss black Duplicolor Vinyl + Fabric rattle can automotive interior paint. I did 2 very light coats, sometimes 3 if I felt it needed it. It has held up great after two years to daily driven abuse with only one minor spot in the entire car that has started to chip because something hard hit it.
Did you clean the plastic well before painting? What kind of environment did you paint and let the paint dry in?

Re: painting interior plastics,help
If you get the chance, I might try sanding it down and repeating. Maybe use the paint that Darkshot mentioned, and paint 2 or 3 light coats at exactly the time interval the instructions say. Also as mentioned, keep it in a dry clean environment till it is dry.
I'm not an expert on paint, but depending on drying time and thickness of coats, it can take a very long time to dry, and that could be your problem. If you do it again, let us know how it turns out.

Try using krylon fusion and very light coats. Maybe 1 or 2 coats. Clean the entire surface with rubbing alcohol before painting. Fusion works good, I've painted polished plastic in 30 degree temperatures.

I'd assume that the krylon fusion is only good for rigid plastic parts? Sounds like it my be best for the trim pieces, but any vinyl painted would probably be better of with the Duplicolor vinyl+fabric paint. My 2 cents anyways.

DO NOT sand the interior plastic before you paint them. You will completely ruin them. Just clean well with degreaser or something that gets all the dust off and dry.
I used the Duplicolor on everything: Dash pad, door sills, cover plastics around the rear hatch, door tops, the dash itself, gauge bezel, etc etc etc. I used gloss black, it doesn't look stock but it looks good. It's blacker than stock and looks somewhat like armor all is on everything. Looks amazing if you keep it clean.
I bought a can of flat black to do the top of the dash pad to help with glare, worked well.
heres some pics...

and make absolutely sure that it is dry and no soup left cause it well mess it up big time. There's an old garage myth not sure if it true but they say that Palmolive dish soap get rid of oils and residues the best.

Re: painting interior plastics,help
don't use paint, use dye. SEM makes some good stuff. There are also other brands, but the dye is more permanent than paint and it wont flake off. There is another brand that makes a dye that permanently bonds to the plastic and it is what a lot of automotive manufacturers use. I can't think of the name right now, but the only drawback is their color choices aren't as big as SEM. SEM has pretty much any color you can think of, and alot of them are very close to OEM.

To Chime in here, you need to use a adhesion promoter for those plastic
pieces. That is what makes it so it does not chip etc....Krylon makes one,
duplicolor makes one etc.....works well as it was designed for plastic painting.

Re: painting interior plastics,help
kRYLON fusion is the best thing next to dye and adhesion promoter, maybe you didnt use rubbing alcohol or ammonia based cleaner? the important step that alot of people mess up is the dusting first coats.. the first 2 or 3 coats should be very, very thin. Fusion properly painted is so scatch and chip resistant is ridiculous. Ive tried using my nails to scratch the paint off of gray panels painted black after setting for the 7 days they recommend, only when really digging in over and over in the same spot did it show slight grey. Get satin black, it looks the most like stock.

Re: painting interior plastics,help
had to paint mine due the horrible sun rot.. wet sanded all the deep scratches down with 2k sprayed a ayer of primer the krylon turned out nicely. sanding would only hurt if you sand to deep and actually put scratches in the plastic.

Re: painting interior plastics,help
I started painting mine as well they are grey, I was going to paint them black and put it off for about a year, until I found a '92 RS W/ black interior, so i gutted her at the bone yard of all plastic and walked away with only paying $30 for everything plastic, I am going back tomorrow for the inner door arm rests which are mint as all the plastics were.
So I will probally be selling my grey plastics soon
