Hatch pull down ???

I decided it was warm enough to tackle the Fat Mat installation ( PITA ) , this was the first time I had taken the plastic panels out of the back so I was trying to be really observant . I noticed the latch assembly has a gear on a shaft dangling under it , I'm assuming this is the pull down drive gear , but there's no motor .
My question is do I need the pull down ? Does it function like a cadillac trunk pull down ? Would this explain all the squeeking from the hatch seal ?
Any help would be much appreciated , thanks guys .

Yup that would explain the squeeking I dont have a pull down motor aswell and It sounds like I have crickets in the back seat. I will be getting one soon off of ebay as I have gone long enough listening to that.

Haven't gotten into my rearpanel to see what all I need, but I don't have any squeeking going on, but if I open my hatch, I have to slam it about 3 times to get it to secure itself.

Re: Hatch pull down ???

Looking ahead , when I replace the pull down is their any chance I could mount it too low and break my rear glass ?
Sorry if these questions seem dumb but I've never seen one work and I don't know how much power they have .
