Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

This should really go under the stupid question deserves stupid answer topic, but...

Anyway, trying to swap out stock 88 IROC wheel for custom Momo. (The Momo was on my 91 and strangely enough, I only recall using a screw driver to get it off of the 91).

I have the stock wheel off, but the harness is still attached to the column. The harness (in case I'm not calling it by correct name), is the steel pronged device that your wheel actually sits on/attaches to. Lookes like it has 3 rivets through it but they don't appear to be attached to anything. For the life of me, I have no idea how to get it off. I've pulled and pulled and bent the **** out of the prongs, but it won't budge. I have a 'lock plate remover', but I don't think I'm even at that stage because I can't get this harness off.

If I need to take a pic, I'll do it tonight. I'm sure somebody knows what I'm talking about though.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ask me questions - If I can clarify, I will.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

Sorry about the week long delay. Needed batteries...

So here is the pic. Anyone have thoughts now? Just to refresh -

I'm trying to pull the 'rust colored' harness off. Tell me how please? Yes, that center bolt has already been pulled, its just there so I don't lose it.

Thanks

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

Use the lockplate tool to compress that down and see if there is a washer ring holding it in there. Can't hurt.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

Really? Okay. I had a diagram/instructions come with the puller, but they don't look anything like that thing up there.

I'll give'r a try tonight.

Thanks very much.

Like I said, my T/A didn't have that star shaped piece, but I would still try to compress it gently just to see if there is a washer holding it on. The bolt shown in the pic has aleady been removed right?

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

On second thought, those two holes in that piece makes me think the steering wheel puller should remove it. Check for any clips/washers, spray it with Wd-40, and try to use the steering puller to get it off.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

Yes, bolt is off, just there so I don't lose it while I'm not working on it.

Somebody else mentioned there might be a 'cotler pin' (sp) under there somewhere...

Definitely something holding it in place as I've yanked with everything I have to try and get it out. Short of attaching it to the truck and trying to pull it that way, I've tried everything.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

Yes, there is usually a pin under the bolt. After that pin is removed spray it with WD-40 and let it sit for awhile. Then try the steering wheel puller to remove it. The screws that came with the puller should go into the holes you see on each side of the bolt. That piece is part of the steering wheel, so I'm not sure why it didn't come off with the wheel. Did you use the puller to remove the wheel?

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

No, I didn't use the puller for the actual wheel. Which is probably part of the problem. I just unscrewed it and it came right off with no wiggle or anything...

I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes.

Thanks for all the thoughts.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

I agree with everyone in that the rusted star is part of the actual steering wheel...Firebird wheels have it too, but ours are riveted to the wheel itself... As stated previously, you have to use the steering wheel puller. Attach the two long bolts to the two holes on either side and the long middle one will go in, well, the middle... Last time I pulled the wheel off, I used a crank pulley puller!

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel Harness?

i bought a grant steering wheel puller to get this thing off and had to crank the wrench so hard the puller literally broke in half.. part of that is that grant makes the crappiest steering wheel pullers of all time but there's definitely something holding it on, soaked it in wd40, etc, won't even wiggle

did you ever figure out how to get this thing off? some hidden clip or rivet or something? it would be a huge help for me before i accidentally yank the whole column out.... thanks
