Getting at back of speedometer
I need to install the abbott x box to complete my T-56 swap. I dropped the steering column and removed all of the trim in front of the gauges thinking I could pull the speedo out a bit to access the back of it but it won't budge. I can see the speedo cable from the back when I stick my head under the dash but it doesn't look like I can get at it without moving the whole assembly. There is a thick bundle of wires wrapped in that black plastic convoluted tubing running under the dash right where the cable goes into the back of the speedo. Someone please give me some advice. I've heard about two 10mm bolts that can be removed to pull the cluster forward but I don't see them. The car is an 88 Iroc by the way.

Here is the easiest method to remove the instrument cluster (mech speedo): Jack up the front of the car, unscrew the speedo cable from the tranny, and loosen the clips that hold the cable along the body. Then, go back to the inside of the car and pull out the instrument cluster as far forward as you need to get to the clip on the back of the speedo.

I didnt need to unhook it at the tranny.....I just unscrewed the cluster at the dash and unhooked the speedo cable at the gauge. Theres plenty of room to get to the clip.
Do you have the whole gauge cluster loose where you can pull it a few inches from the dash? If not keep lookin for screws. I had to disassemble the cluster partially in my car to get to them.

Re: Getting at back of speedometer
A helper is very handy. I stood outside the car and looked in through the windshield down into the left speaker area (speaker removed) and with one hand I used a flashlight while the other hand used a long and thin screwdriver to activate the quick release tab JamesC outlines. The helper sat in the driver seat and pulled the cluster straight out once the tab was touched. Not a popular job and putting it back in sucks too. While it's out, take the time to do cleaning and bulb replacement/led upgrades if necessary.
