A question for those who have recovered their own headliner.....

I have the old one pulled and removed, no problems.

So far prep had been dragging a scraper lightly over old board to loosen foam, brushed the pilled foam off by hand, and went over the board with a 3M lint remover until no more was coming off to pull up the smaller pieces to get it close to ready for new fabric.

Here's my question/dilemma:

I bought the car with the headliner sagging and a couple large tacks holding it up on the passanger side. After removing the board and material, I found a couple small gouges and one hole into the backing board.

Since there are no breaks or missing pieces, can a cloth tape be used to cover these areas before attaching the new liner without much in the way of ill effects, or is the board essentially trash at this point?

Also, I included one pic where it appears the sunvisor bracket over time wore through the board on one sice almost like it was the blade on some snips.... can I resurface that area with a cloth tape to reinforce it, anyone have experience with that when working on their cars?

I recently concluded the ABS headliners are not for me after seeing one in a car, I hate how it divides the roofline into two seperate compartments with that bar that drops down in the center, hoping to re-use the stock board just recovered....

You can fix that headliner easily. Brush the whole thing down with fiberglass resin. This will make it hard. Then fill those holes with fiberglass filler. Sand and your golden.

Thats what I did. Mine was in pieces. Used resin and fiberglass cloth to put it all back together. Heavily reinforced. I haven't recovered it yet.
