Need headliner help badly...

I bought one of those ABS headliners from Hawks, but the damn thing won't stay up in this heat. The only "bolts" that held the original headliner to the roof on the were grooved into the cardboard material and sat in a slot where the windshield meets the roof and keep the front of the headliner from falling down.

Since I can't use them because the new piece is ABS, I've been trying various types and amounts of velcro materials and the heat just makes them lose their grip causing the headliner to dip and become extremely aggravating while driving. Having the sun visors in doesn't help a bit, as the very front center sags down the most, nearly touching the rear view mirror.

Any ideas to keep it up?

Re: Need headliner help badly...

just because the velcros not sticking, i would try and get new velcro, Ca it to the roof or superglue it and see if it sticks.. that may work for a while but thats all i can think of. anyone else? try to get more velcro also and put it everywhere not just in one spot.

the only problem with adding a roof cons0le is if you do, it takes away from the originality. Any other ways to keep it up guys?

Re: Need headliner help badly...

Only thing that comes to mind to me is finding someone who still has their trashed/broken up headliner and convincing them to pull the couple old styled clips off it for you. At that point, maybe you can gorilla glue or otherwise bond them onto the abs piece, perhaps after trimming the back of them down a bit to make up for not being recessed into the backing board, and use those factory mounts.

Re: Need headliner help badly...

I've have heard many people on this site that have tried these I can't think of ne who said it was perfect. I just pulled out my original headliner and am getting ready to try and fix it myself using headliner material and fiberglass resin+ cloth. If you still have yours u might want to try this. Also From what i have heard the best way to deal with these is to put in that roof console and also take off the tabs that hold in the original board and then attach them to the abs as best as possible. And i havent heard of nebody doing this but i was wondering if it might work to take a really small screw and cut a hole then screw the abs to the roof (don't go through lol) and then recover it with the fabric. this idea jsut came to me and im somewat tired, so yeah......... anyway just thought id throw in everything i know/ have heard.... good luck and if you find nething that works for u im sure it would b appreciated if u put it up here.

Re: Need headliner help badly...

I wonder if Liquid Nails would work, using clamps to hold it in place until it dries?

I'm going to have to buy the ABS headliner myself, but mine is a hardtop w/ console so maybe it wont be so bad.

Re: Need headliner help badly...

I took the clips off the front of my stock headliner and epoxied them onto the ABS one. This helped, but as other have said, it's really the sunvisors and overhead console that holds it up in the front.

Yup, thats the only thing keeping me from buying an overhead console.

However- those magnets DEFINITELY look like they're worth a shot! My only fear is that the sticky sides will also let go (like now) as the cabin gets heated from being outside. Either way, it looks like its worth a fair attempt, even if it isn't that type of magnet.

Yeah, if you could find magnets with no adhesive it would be better, that way you could use your own.

I'll give the industrial stuff a try. I have two types I've used so far. One was a plasticy kind- sucked. The second worked for a day or two the the adhesion wore off- and that stuff was from Home Depot. There is a Wal Mart by work I can try to hit up. With enough tries I'm going to get this damned thing to stay up on its own!

Re: Need headliner help badly...

i would even add a bead of super glue to the back of that velcro. i did that on my sail panels(shi$y aftermarket ones with no clips) the panels where straight and stiff as a board. and they have to be mounted on an angel. well the velcro kept coming off so i put a bead of super glue on it and no problems yet. youll get it if we put a man on the moon here in america we must have a product to hold up plastic. if you have any other questions feel free to ask. ive done 3 of these garbage plastic headliners

Asks Hawks what the fix is. They sell it, they should fix the problem with their product and not make it yours!

Re: Need headliner help badly...

So far industrial velcro is working, (after an alcohol cleaning) but its fading already!!!!

My bet is that I'm going to have to JB weld and/or superglue the crappy adhesion velcro to my metal/velcro on the liner. Something I hoped I'd never have to do, but if it works....it works. Shoody workmanship? Yes. Am I proud? Far from it, but if thats what it takes to keep that lame *** thing up, then I'll live with it.

As far as Hawks, I'm honestly disheartned that this product isn't what its made up to be. Not a bad mouth, but damn, they engineered it knowing its heavier, etc and offered no extra support regarless of the feedback in this thread and others like it (which is what lead me to this one). I'm not asking for any compensation back, but beware when you purchase the ABS headliner, it will need a good bit of adjustment and your time to make it right if you're a perfectionist/big fan of your vehicle like I am.

nah man
believe me its not hawks. ive been thru this headliner crap twice. theres only one company out there that makes these headliners for these resto companys and its called acme headliner. i got my first one back in 2002 from classic industries. and i got a different colored one this year from 1aauto and thier all ****. theres no contact info for acme headliners that i can locate on the web. also the resto companys will not give me any more info on them. but thier all the same. mine finally looks decient but i do have the roof console saving my A$$. my sunvisor holes never lined up and also there was a real bad sag on the back bar of the tops where i used that industrial velcro(u can actaully see the sag and body colored metal in my garage pictures). also a trick i used was . my headliner even with the velcro sagged where as it showed some of the body colored metal and it looked nasty. what you can do for that is they sell this real cheap door edge molding for 2.99 at your local parts store. you can paint it to match what ever you like. i pushed it over the exposed metal and it even has its own adhesive. and it makes everything one solid color and really cleans things up. if you need any more help or if i have confused you a bit. private message me. ill help the best i can. good luck man

Re: Need headliner help badly...

Sorry if I'm repeating this, I didn't read everything in this thread, but...

There is a certain adhesive spray meant for fabrics for autos such as headliners, carpet, sunvisors, speaker covers, w/e you need cloth to stick too and it works great. You can buy it real cheap at like Wal-Mart or any department store in the automotive area.

I used it on the carpet in my hatch today and I reupholstered my speaker covers today with it also. All you do is spray it down, apply a material, press down good and firm and smooth everything out with your hand/ruler, then cut away any real excess you dont want hanging off and it will look brand new! Even if you put padding in between the roof and headling, just spray the roof, apply padding, spray padding, apply cloth. You'd be suprised how simple it really is.

I would find some of those plastic push fasteners, like the ones that hold on the door panels, put those through the abs into the factory slots in the roof.
They come in all different sizes you should be able to find some that fit and won't fall out.

I was thinking of this too! Good thread considering that I took off my headliner which was falling apart and dropping that woody material on my head and face whenever my head brushed the edges; hence, I now need a replacement headliner.

I was also seriously considering making my own but getting the curves in there made me think; nope! by the abs one and rig that one up.

Re: Need headliner help badly...

im working on my interior as we speak and ive just begun my search for a new headliner and the abs seems to be the choice. since ive decided this ive run into alot of these threads about not being able to keep the thing up, my advice since this is what i may do(not sure Yet) order it bare, paint it black with SEM interior vinyl, leather and plastic paint, and drill holes in it to match the bracing in the roof ( THE BRACING, ahem, not drill holes through my roof..heh heh...although i can see some ppl doin that). i think this is the best route, just use black smooth tip phillips head screws. then again... my formula is a hardtop, but im sure this route would work in a t-top... just a matter of...do you mind seeing very small screws in the headliner? just an idea! good luck
