I just bought a 89 RS for my son, his first car and I can not get the hatch open. I put the key in and turn it but the hatch won't open is this a electric switch and if so is there a release inside the car? Thanks in advance for any info.

 

In between the window switches (if equipt with P/W) there should be a switch there. Thats the electric release.

 

on my 92 with elec hatch sometimes when i turn the key it wont open unless i give a small tug on the hatch i know mine does this because it was rear ended and the quarter pannel is rubbing the deck lid but like TurbomanKnight said the switch on the center console should have a switch.

 

If the switch doesnt work you could try pulling on the cable that attaches to the lock cylinder.You have to remove the small light that is mounted in the center rear hatch trim piece.Then stick your finger in there on the left hand side and feel for the cable that is attached to the pulldown unit.Give a tug on that and it should pop the hatch open.I have had to do this many times on junkyard 3rd gens
