Fix for the dreaded twisted steering wheel leather syndrome?

The steering wheel on my Z has the dreaded twisted leather. Sure, I could spend $170 and have it redone, but....

I was thinking, (very dangerous), that I can physically twist in back on place and it'll look half decent. Of course, the moment you touch it again - well, it twists back.

What if you could inject some sort of an adhesive, like a gel type crazy glue, under the leather to stabilize it?

What do you guys think? Anyone ever try something like that?

Yeah I think I know what you're talking about, ex: you leave the t-tops off during graduation and it rains and the vinyl gets all wierd and starts sloughing off chunks? My advice is to get an aftermarket wheel. I put a grant's Formula GT on, and it looks sooooo much better then the stock one anyways. Although I miss the big horn button.

Damn, the ones at Hawks are $349 minus $50 core.

Where did you get the $170 quote? Have you tried an upholstery shop?

A hypodermic syringe filled with krazy glue works pretty good at this. Just make sure you dont need to drive it for a day, as the glue will take a while to set op without being exposed to a lot of oxygen. I personally would get a nice lecarra or momo wheel....

So, you've actually done this before? Where/how do you inject through the leather? Which glue works best, thick or thinner?

Screw Hawks, they are just buying it from the same place you would and tacking more money on top of that. That's highway robbery.

Go to eBay and search for a member called Chuck Pelton, he re-wraps almost any GM wheel and Camaro/Firebirds are one of them.....the cost is around $170-179.

Here is a link to Chuck Pelton's Camaro steering wheel on Ebay:

I just purchased one last week and it arrived on Tuesday. The leather wrap is really nice. I'll try to get some pictures of it up tomorrow after work.

Re: Fix for the dreaded twisted steering wheel leather syndrome?

I've done it. I found that just injecting a very small amount in several places works the best. I used a syringe that I bought at a drugstore( You might want to buy several, they get jammed up quick!) I bought the smallest ones they had. I used the "Krazy glue Gel" Went pretty well, just put a towel over everything as its easy to spill and make a mess. Acetone fingernail polish works great for removing any spills. Let me know how it goes.
