Wet driver's side floor!!

My car is wet on the driver's side floor everytime after rain. I cannot understand where the water is coming from. I never drive her in the rain so I doubt its coming from underneath. That being said I don't think my window is leaking either bc after rainfall there is no water on the seat or door. Anyone got any ideas??

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

My guess would be the cowl area, underneath the plastic window-screen looking thing. With the hood open it's pretty easy to take that screen off and look inside there. Make sure it's not clogged up with leaves and/or crud, and doesn't have any rust holes down in it. If you run water in there with the hose, it shouldn't puddle up, but should drain quickly down out the fenders. The only other source could be down through the A/C box, but that's covered by the hood and shouldn't even really get wet when it rains.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

Hi, I had the same problem on my 91 Firebird. After many attempts to find the leak, I found that the rubber grommet that seals around the hood cable was allowing water to get by it. The water drips down the cowl and right onto the hood cable and through the grommet. I sealed all around it and no more leak. The carpet and the driver's floor wasn't so lucky. Hope it works out for you

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

factory, or older windshield? could be a seal, or the sealant used on the windshield.
take the underdash(hush panel) off and feel up above the steering column on the friewall insulation when the floor is wet to see if its comming from high above.
good luck.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

I had a similar problem with my camaro it turns out the person before me drilled a whole in the firewall right above the inner fender and the water just ran right in. What I did was just use a hose and a flashlight, have someone one the outside spraying the car with the hose while your on the inside looking for the leak.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

How well does the new hood seal along the wetherstrip on top of the cowl?

That could allow water to go to places it did not go with the factory hood!

(ie: anything on the firewall)

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

i had the same problem. . .
i had a small rust spot up above the firewall/cowl area i had to cut out. it looks like this would be a common problem. GM didn't do the best job at seam sealing eiether so im not suprised.

Funny you mention it I was on the highway in a terrible storm last weekend when water started pouring from under the hush panel and into my shoes.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

I believe we finally found the leak. I am not 100% sure at this poit but we sprayed water on the car with no leaks. My Dad found a rusty spot under the vent that houses the wipers. We sanded and sealed it and so far I don't see any water. The water did cause some floor damage that needs to be repaired. Thanks for the help ppl.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

I know this is an old thread but i've got a water leak somewhere on my drivers side firewall. I havent found any rust holes and I'm having a hard time pinpointing exactly where its leaking at but I think maybe one of the grommets that seal where the cables run may possibly be the cause. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to seal or repair the grommets? silicone?

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

My first thought was the cowl area too, but I took a hose to it and didnt see it puddle up and didnt see any water running out into the floor, but I'll take the screen off and get a closer look tommorow.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

i dont think you would have an issue with the grommets. i have mine enlarged, as ive rewired most of my car. one of my grommets has room for more goodies to go through. i spray my motor off with a nozzle all the time and my floor doesnt get wet in my car.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

okay I just checked again today. The cowl area wasnt clogged, but I had my brother spray the engine bay while I layed in the floor board and I found that the water was coming from the steering shaft inside the car. Not sure how to go about fixing it. Im not sure if theres a crack in the firewall or if that seal around the shaft is the problem.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

are the bolts tight? i havent been around the steering column in a while. i dont know if there is a replaceable seal on it or not. maybe the bolts backed out over the years?

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

I just checked the bolts this morning and they actually were a little loose. I didnt turn them to much because I dont really no the torque specs. The seal in the engine bay was cracked a little also, so I put some rubber sealant on it. When it warms up I'll check to see if that solved the leak.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

As far as I can tell my leak was coming from the seal around the steering shaft and possibly some moisture getting by a connector on the drivers side firewall. I put some rubber sealer around both of them and sprayed it down and didnt see the leak anymore. I had never heard of water getting in through there before.

Re: Wet driver's side floor!!

My passenger side was always wet after rain, When I removed the A/C condesner unit on the firewall, and pulled the carpet back I could see light coming through where the seam sealer had cracked away..

Five years later and I'm working on another 92 RS(girlfriends) it leaks around passenger side firewall. Im assuming the A/C condesner is the black canister on passenger side firewall of engine bay. I sprayed water directly under it where that seam is. I asume this is her leak. Anyone ever had to seal this area up? I used caulk in the cowl area before but not sure how well I can do it with the condenser in there.
