No, you don't need to touch the column itself if you need to replace the arm/lever. It's simply an arm/lever that actuates the switches inside the columns.

Re: turn signal lever( again)

Push in on the lever, turn counter-clockwise about 90 degrees, and it comes right out. You may have to wiggle it a little, but it does just slide out.

i read your post a couple months back. i been trying that off and on with a little fear. i was worried it was maybe a rare pontiac thing. ill try again. i was just reading a haynes manual and it said the lock plate needs to come out and i need to loosen the turn signal arm screw ever hear of anything like this?

What Ward said above (and what I posted) is correct. But I'm not sure about the "Push in on the lever, turn counter-clockwise about 90 degrees" is necessary. I've never really looked at the socket ends to verify myself, but even the GM shop manuals do not mention doing that procedure. They simply state to pull the multifunction lever straight out.

What the Haynes manual appears to be describing is removing the switch itself.

You do not remove the steering wheel or parts on the column.

Re: turn signal lever( again)

JT is correct, the column doesn't have to come apart just to replace the lever. I think the manual is talking about replacing the turn signal switch itself, the piece that the lever slides into. In that case, the wheel and lock plate would have to come off.
