steering column problem

Hello all,

Don't post much here, but this relates to my 88 S-10, which we all know has mostly the same parts as 3rd gens.

Ok so I pull my steering wheel off to replace the ign lock cylinder, go to put it all back together and the upper shaft is really loose. This happened to me before on my 88 Trans am, but I some how corrected the problem. Just dont remember how I corrected it.

So I suspect that it has to do with that ring that acts as the inner race of the bearing on the upper shaft. I can pop it back in, and it takes up most of the slop, but when I go to reassemble the lock plate assembly, it loosens right up again.

Did I loose something that holds this race in? or am i forgetting something?

I put the race it, put the spring cup in, then spring, then the plastic horn piece, then retaining plate, etc.

Can't seem to figure this out.

Any help would be appreciated.
