How to remove the bloody HVAC controls

1991 RS
I'm trying to remove the HVAC control unit from my car to regrease it.
I've removed the radio.
I've removed the plastic face plate that goes around the radio and HVAC controls.
I've removed the bolts that hold the HVAC controls to the center console/car its self.
I've removed the two bolts that hold the vacuum line octopus to the HVAC controls.
I still can't get it out. Unfortunately, I can't see back in there all that well either. There's a cable that moves when I move the temperature slider and it appears to be the main hangup at the moment, that and whatever is on the back of the fan switch. I got the cable for the temperature slider disconnected but the housing is still in place and seems to be holding stuff back. How can I remove that housing piece so that I can get the hvac control out of my dash and get a good look at it? I haven't been able to find any pictures searching here that give me an idea of what I'm after and the Haynes book is useless.

I had the whole center section out replacing the carpet in my 86 and still didn't have that HVAC control disconnected...

I pulled mine several years ago and experienced problems until I discovered that the cable is attached to the control head unit by a snap-in type clip inserted from beneath. It can be released, IIRC, from the top (driver's side, again IIRC) with a small flat-bladded screw driver.

Re: How to remove the bloody HVAC controls

Have you removed the readio pod itself? That gives you much more room. I took mine out in both my 87 and 86 to do some swapping. I remember it being quite easy.

Though I cant quite remember how the cable was attached to the unit. But I dont remember it being a big deal. Remove the pod, and take a better look at it now that you have more room to move it around.

It's that clip on the top of the unit holding the cable housing in that's got me hung up I think. I found it and wasn't able to pry it off. I'll try that again tonight if I get time.
Ghettocruiser, yes I have the radio its self removed.
