headliner repair question

My headliner is sagging bad so i took it out and am planning on recovering it. I scraped all the old foam off and called around to the fabric stores in my area and none of them carry fabric with a foam backing. so I came up with another crazy scheme and Im wondering if you guys think it would work. the headliner fabric is not ripped or anything so I was thinking maybe I could just glue the fabric right to the headliner insulation stuff and leave the foam out of it. Do you think it would work? thanks

Re: headliner repair question

I have done it....near impossible to get it without some bumps left over from the old glue etc. Maybe try sanding the boards first

Re: headliner repair question

I made some more calls today and still cant find the propor fabric so I thought of another idea, buy some 1/4" foam and glue my fabric to the foam and then the foam to the headliner board, do you think that would work? the only other option is get it done somewhere and i called today it would cost $100. what do you think? thanks

Re: headliner repair question

The reason people dont do that, is because that is 2 surfaces that could fail, instead of one in the future. Not to mention if the material is too thin the glue can bleed through.

Re: headliner repair question

the material you want is available . not sure of the price in your area . another fix i have seen is stretchable vinyl . resin coat of headliner shell , material , heat gun , time & skill , i did not see it done but i saw the results . one word , FANDAMNTASTIC . good luck .

I can get you the right material and ship it to you for what it costs me, just to help out a fellow member.

Re: headliner repair question

thanks for the offer iron duke, but by the time I pay for the material and shipping and then find some glue I think I might be better off to just pay a little more and get it done somewhere and avoid the hassle.

Re: headliner repair question

I went to JoAnn Fabrics last week and checked for the headliner material. They had what appeared to be the perfect match for my car for $11 a yard. Not sure what color you need, but this was the grey that alot of the cars have.

That's where I got mine too, and if you regularly check the mail and newspapers for coupons you can get it for even cheaper. I ended up getting mine for like $4 a yard after the discount.

Re: headliner repair question

if you've still got a board then this will work http://www.wlsheadliners.com/tutorials/camaro/

but does anybody know how i could find a headliner board as my headliner is currently just the metal roof, or does anybody know how to put the fabric up without a board

You can order an ABS headliner board for your car off the internet.

Hows that?

Ya that would never turn out right, and if you ever needed to take your headliner off for any reason, you'll have to scrape it off and sounds like a big mess.

Did you try Joanne fabrics for the fabric yet? They should have it, it's in the back with the vinyls and stuff. I think they even call it headliner material.

If you're calling, they old lady that answers the phone just might not know what it is you want. I would just stop in and take a look.
