92 steering wheel swap
Is there a certain kit I have to get or will the earlier model adapters work. I hate the 92 steering wheel it is huge and on a slight turn I cant see my guages and I have to damn near punch the wheel to get the horn to work.

Re: 92 steering wheel swap
Not sure that you'd be interested, but a 4th gen wheel is a direct swap, and you get to maintain the airbag. The only thing that's different is the electrical connector for the airbag itself - you'll have to use the connector off your old airbag, get the column end of the connector from the donor car, or splice in your own connections. I put a 4th gen wheel in my 1992 and my 1990 - being newer they look alot better.

Im not a big fan in airbags I was thinking of pulling mine out and having a little fun with it. Ever since I started custom interior and stereo I have heard air bag horror stories and seen a couple for myself and I never trust them. My friend was in a recent accident and flipped his 2007 scion XD 3 times at 70mph and not one air bag deployed and all he had a broken nose.

Re: 92 steering wheel swap
To answer the original question, yes the Grant adapters for earlier 3rd-gen Camaros will work just fine. When I got my 92 the airbag was already blown as it had been wrecked. I didn't want to mess with replacing it for many reasons, so I picked up a Grant wheel cheap on Ebay. I got the adapter at my local Autozone. I forget the part number, but you can get it if you go to Grant's website, just use an 89 Camaro.
Make sure you disconnect the battery before you do anything with the wheel. You will also want to disconnect the airbag wires that run up through the column. It should be a pair of wires in a yellow harness under the dash at the bottom of the column. Just cut the connector off the end after you disconnect it so you can pull the wires up through the column to remove the clock spring.
If you want to, there is also a sensor under the center console you can remove, as well as the sensors on the impact bar behind the front bumper.

Re: 92 steering wheel swap
I just cut the yellow wire and replaced my 1991 GTA airbag wheel with one brand new from a 1984. It looks awesome! The one problem is that now the car is completely dead. It will not turn over at all but all the lights work and the radio works just fine. Its funny, it worked ok for a day or two and then nothing. I checked the battery, starter and alternator. All good and then someone mentioned that that car has a chip in the key and by cutting the wire i may have screwed myself. Please help me! I am going on two weeks of riding the bus.

ManzGTA91, cutting the yellow wire shouldn't cause that to happen... it is just used for the airbag system... try pulling the SRS fuse and see what happens.. that fuse is for the airbag system... I hope that those yellow wires were the only ones you cut...
If you happened to cut two wires together that were orange and white then you have cut the wires that belong to the VATS system. If you did, re-connect them. Those two little wires run up to your ignition switch and read the chip on your key that has a certain resistance on it.. If its not the right key, then you will not be able to start your car.

Re: 92 steering wheel swap
When I cut the wire, I just cut whatever was in the yellow tube of wires that ran to the air bag. I cut nothing else. As I said before it ran for a day and then would not even turn over. Nothing at all. All the lights radio and horn work just will not crank. In that tube were there more wires than just air bag related wires? I keep reading that it screwed up the vats but I just cant see how I did that. Should I remove all the airbag wiring back to source? There is a light on the dash now that stays on and a code has been tripped but will that cause the car to not crank?

Re: 92 steering wheel swap
Is there any way that you can find out the code that is set? Also, which light is lit on the dash? Is it the service engine light or the SRS light? I don't see where you cutting the yellow wires would have any effect on starting the car... Have you looked at all the fuses yet? Make sure they are all good.. you might have one that has blown.

Me too! Down with ugly 91-92 airbag wheels, up with much more attractive earlier style wheels! I've got the rubber style base 3 spoke 1984-86 steering wheel in mine, great upgrade and was less than $40/shipped from eBay a few years back.
Re: 92 steering wheel swap
I finally got the car to start and have no idea how. I did find this strange connector hanging down with a black looped wire about 2 inches long going into it on one side. On the othe other there were two green wires a yellow wire a a brownish purple wire. It looks to be after market and when I remove the black looped wie the care work crank like before. Is this a vat bypass? Anyway it is partially melted and Burnt and sparked nicely when I tried to seperate all the wise from touching. The car starts now but I need to know how to remove or fix this chop job. Also, he had his radio power wrapped around a fuse and jammed in the fuse box. Real hillbilly crap going on here. I can send you a picture of this mess if you like.

Re: 92 steering wheel swap
Like this? BTW, I forget which one right now but if you cut one wire to the SRS module, it goes dead and the light goes out. No bulb removal required. Glad you fixed the problem.
