I have a very pristine '88 Trans am.Everything on the car is in near flawless condition. However, the center console has the same problem as most Firebirds of the same years. The soft rubber/plastic (?) that covers the center console is peeling away from the supporting structure beneath. My brother and I tried hot glue on his center console (an '89 Firebird) and held it in place for a few hours with small clamps, but that didn't hold up more than a week or two.

Does anyone know of a way to repair this problem cleanly and permanently?
What type of GLUE or adhesive would stick and hold?

 

You might want to try some two-part epoxy.

 

When mine did that all I used was Loctite Superglue. It has been 2 years now and it still hasnt come apart.

I'm having the same problem also. I'm in the process of making a small plate, welding studs on one end, then placing them on the center counsole so it will pull the sides together. I might not be explaning it very well, but after finals I will finish and I will have pics.

Here's how I fixed my bird's center console when it was peeling away just like what you guys are dealing with.. In my case, I had both sides of my console peeling away...

Take out the shift plate.
------------------------------------------
Take the console out of the car.
------------------------------------------
Where the material is peeling back and wherever else you want to reglue, remove some of the old foam under the material that has seperated, so you have a nice place for glue to go.
------------------------------------------
Get some really big wood clamps, (the ones that can stretch to like 4 ft)
------------------------------------------
Get some Gorilla Glue (Awesome stuff)
------------------------------------------
Get 2 pieces of wood (2x4 or whatever you can find) and cut them to the length of the console.
------------------------------------------
Put a bead of glue under the material where it has separated (Gorilla Glue expands a good bit so DO NOT go overboard with the amount of glue, unless you want a bad mess later)
------------------------------------------
Clamp the pieces of wood to the sides of the console so it holds the material to the console and so the glue can do its job. (Don't clamp them too hard or you will get imprints on your console.
------------------------------------------
Wait a couple hours and remove the clamps.
------------------------------------------
Install console back into car.

You're done!

 

I agree with the Gorilla Glue. I used it on my center console and it holds well.

 

Using big clamps and pieces of nice straight wood to distribute the clamping force is a very good tip.

Its the only way to get the sides to lay nice and flat and straight. Otherwise, you'll see the wavy sides like you do in alot of cars where the people just try to hold them by hand til the glue sets.

Another vote for Gorilla glue...you cant go wrong with any of those products in my opinion...
