Steering *column* loose, steering tight

Hi All -

The steering column on my 86 Bird is loose, while the steering itself is tight.

What I mean is that the left to right rotation on the wheel itself works great, but the shaft itself has about an inch of give up and down; it's like the height adjustment doesn't lock tight enough.

Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, how do you fix it? Do you have to start by taking the steering column apart, or is it something that can be fixed without running the risk of loosening my wheel?

Thanks,

-Mark

Re: Steering *column* loose, steering tight

This question gets asked like every month.....And answered. NOBODY ever searches before asking questions? Not only that...It's on the main page link to the Technical Articles.

https://www.thirdgen.org/steeringcolumn

Considering the special tools needed to do this...I paid a shop $100 (across the street from my house) & picked my car 4 hrs later...Done. It was WAY worth the $100 I paid.

Re: Steering *column* loose, steering tight

Thanks. I actually *did* seach and came across these instructions a while back, but based on the steps involved, I thought he was talking about fixing a loose wheel (the turning motion), and not the column itself.

Thanks again!
