Removing Steering Wheel?

Ugh,

I'm having problem after problem with this, and just makes me so mad that I don't even want to look at it, removing the steering wheel should be easy.. nope..

I went to autozone.. and rented a steering wheel removal tool, hooked it up like i was supposed to.. started tightening the tool to try and get the wheel off.. and one of the bolts with the kit.. snapped off inside the steering wheel down inside.. grr.. I was pissed..

so after trying different things for awhile.. nothing.. so I go and buy an easy out kit.. drill out the center of the bolt that got busted.. and started using the kit.. the bit breakes off inside the bolt inside the steering wheel.. WTF?

after messing around with this for awhile.. I get pissed.. and goto sears and buy a kit to tap a new hole so i can just thread in a different hole.. I drill in a new, and use the tap to make the threads, but the tap doesnt seem to be working right or something, I cant get a bolt to thread in it, and they are the right size bolt.. and i used the right size bit and everything.. I dunno.. I'm just getting furious..

does anyone know of another way to possibly take the wheel off? its garbage, so I could care less what happens to it.

Re: Removing Steering Wheel?

In my quest to find a stock steering wheel to replace my aftermarket one, I actually removed three steering wheels from junkyards (various Camaro styles) to buy to see which one I would like best in my car.

In addition to the center nut that needs to come off, I also encountered, in some 82-89 cars, a small cotterpin/washer type holder. This was in addition to the nut. I had to use a flathead screwdriver in one hand and needlenose pliers in the other. Once that washer came off, I then used the puller and it was almost effortless.

One more tip, from experience, that will make the job faster; use a lug nut wrench; specifically a 4-star one. One of the 4 is a perfect size and with it, tt will spin off extremely fast.

Re: Removing Steering Wheel?

if you just want the wheel off, you can go old school on it. put the center nut on so that its flush with the top of the threads. have someone pull on the steering wheel and bang the crap out of that nut with a big hammer. itll come off, just be sure not to **** the threads on the column.
