replace steering wheel

I want to replace my steering wheel on my '90 RS, I believe it was the first year to have an airbag, but what do I need to do to remove the steering wheel? Do I need a special tool to remove the steering wheel once the airbag has been removed? Thanks in advance

Re: replace steering wheel

once you get the airbag out the wheel comes off like any other wheel. just get a steering wheel puller and you shouldn't have a problem. you will however have an airbag light on if you are putting an aftermarket wheel on it.

Re: replace steering wheel

Not only the light problem, but check to see if your car will pass at inspection time without an airbag, if it is going to be a street car.

Re: replace steering wheel

What about putting a newer steering wheel on?..like a Pontiac G8 steering wheel. Is it possible? Will the airbag work?

Re: replace steering wheel

To my knowledge, thats considered a dual state wheel, not to mention if the splines will line up/add up. You should be able to use a 4th gen firebird or camaro steering wheel though, as many people have wired them in and had no problem. Doing a search would provide more detailed and crutial details about that.

Re: replace steering wheel

I just passed my inspection in january and i could pay them a bit extra to "forget" about the steering wheel, i'm sure, so that's not a problem for me, but is there any way to get that airbag light to shut off?

Re: replace steering wheel

you could pull the bulb. that would be the only way to turn it off.

Re: replace steering wheel

I heard from somewhere that if you place 2 ohm resistors on the wires on both ends of the pigtails that it could turn off the light. Not verified just told to me by an auto body guy.
