......I am talking about the plastic piece about 5 inches wide and the length across the rear headliner and hatch seam. It has about 5 to 6 screws holding it on. It appears the driver side screw holes on the plastic are broke out causing the plastic piece to vibrate and rattle. Is there a way to fix this so the screws hold it place as designed?

I found one on ebay that was in the same shape as mine. My 89 Camaro had the same problem. I never fixed it before I sold it. It must be a common problem.

If somebody has one in good shape in black preferably, if not, any color will be fine I will paint it black. Let me know if you have one.

 

try this in the parts wanted section. just scroll most of the way down on the "message boards" page. youll have much much much better results there.

 

I was hoping for any ideas on a repair idea before looking for a replacement.

you could some small washers and paint them black. you wont ever see it and itll stop rattling.

 

I covered the holes on the face side with good quality masking tape and then filled the holes with epoxy from the back side, let it dry,drill new holes and counter sink.

 

Hmmm, that piece is notorious for breakage. I have seen many fixes and attempted fixes. The screw holes always get blown out possibly from age or over tightening. You best bet is to scour the junk yards or become good at plastic repair, do a search as is has been covered extensively.

 

i have the perfect fix for ya. on my car, ive been swapping the screws out with ones from japanese imports. the imports typically use a larger thread screw with a nicely rounded black phillips head. just go to a wrecking yard and pull some interior screws out of a toyota or honda or something. perfect fix for the stipped screw holes these cars seem to be full of. youll also be amazed at how much quieter the interior is with some nice tight screws....like a new car again.

edit: for your application, the much larger head will act like a washer. the screws im talking about dont look bad either.

 

Why not check out your local big box parts store? Look for the "HELP" parts section. I bought a package of black trim screws with those raised/shaped washers on them. They covered the hogged out screw holes and I used them to secure some loose door panels and trim parts also. Cost....$3 bucks for a pack of 10 or so. Nearly invisible and look neat and factory when finished!
