Re: Cupholder Idea?
Personally I think the best way to do it is if you dont mind drilling into the center console and are half decent with fiberglass. Just take one of the "window cupholders" and use it as a frame, fiberglass the outside of it to make a it solid piece then screw it into the dash, and mold it in for a semi-stock appearance. Plus you can wrap it or get texture paint to help match the interior

Re: Cupholder Idea?
I agree there are many different ways and as many cupholders, I worked at a GM service dept. when I got my Camaro, It was about the time that the SSR came out. I saw one of the cupholders in the SSR and tought it would work good. At that time they were about $20.00 bucks. I also like the fact that it flips closed. Thanks for the input. I am also telling all 3rd gen owners that the 2010 Hot Rod Power Tour dates have been posted Lets have a huge showing of 3rd gens. there.
Re: Cupholder Idea?
I've cut up my wedge cupholder and made them into removable holders for the inside of the center console. I cut a notch up each. I used one screw for each so I can take them out and don't lose any valuable center console real estate.

Re: Cupholder Idea?
This is temporary till I can figure something better. This one's out of an early 90's Taurus or Sable! Ok, I can hear the groans "but it's a Ford POS!" Yes I know and I should be shot but it works (for now).

I wanted to get away with minimal damage so all this took was 4 small holes for the wire ties. I put grooves in the bottom edges of the cup holder for the wire ties to grab onto and so it wouldn't slide around. It's pretty solid with 3 wire ties holding it. I think it's going to be a lil' bouncy though. Standby...

I've seen some jerry-rigged things before but DAMN! Hanging by wires?
I suggest you find 58marks's build. His cup holder mounts like yours would, but his method is WAY more secure & pretty much looks right too.

Re: Cupholder Idea?
Gave it another try last night. With full drinks it settled down and worked ok. We were on the road (some very rough) for over 3 hours and not one spilled drink. The Zip Ties are just temporary. It looks like crap but whatcha gonna do eh? I think any jury rigged solution is going to stand out like a sore thumb in these cars.

What did you put in place of the rectangular compartment on the center console? I don't know what it is for and the lid only opens halfway, what is that I see in the thumbnail photos? I realize this thread is relatively dead but hopefully someone will take the time to notice my post.

Re: Cupholder Idea?
I love the flip down idea (the $4 walmart ones) but just out of curiousity.. has anybody managed to fit 2 of them in and still have the passenger comfortable and both holders accessable? I drink coffee all the time and I don't wanna be the guy to pull the I'm the driver and I get the cupholder card (although I would anyways).

Re: Cupholder Idea?
when i bought my camaro the guy before me installed cup holders. no need for any drilling, you can use the same holes, and screws from console. sorry not the greatest pics. took these pictures a while ago to show my modded radio trim bezel, these are the best pics i could find on my computer to show where the cup holder was installed

Re: Cupholder Idea?
there's a few things..
first of all, it's THICK. to thick
second of all, if you have a drink it's impossible to operate the shifter with any kind of comfort because the cup (especially a taller cup) blocks the access to the shifter
third, even when you don't have a drink, you've got this plastic ring sticking up from the top of the lid, kind of jabbing you in the arm. It never feels right to just have your arm down there in a relaxed position

Re: Cupholder Idea?
Scenario 1
300 mile trip, 150 miles into the trip your sitting outside a gas station with your wittle root beer like a 13 year old for 30 minutes till you can finish it and be on your way
Scenario 2
300 mile trip, 300 miles into the trip your getting out of your car, fully hydrated. You've eatin 4 cheeseburgers and went through 3 big gulps and a slushy.
I don't think the 0.1 pounds a cup holder adds is going to affect a cars performance to much, and if you're driving it "hard" enough to spill a drink with a cup holder. You need to either go to a track, or learn to drive properly on public roads lol.

Who asked your opinion?
Some of is actually enjoy driving and using our cars and that mean actually using it at a drive through restaurant or getting a soda when we fill up our gas tanks
I want to enjoy my car, not feel like its the boss over me.
Hates need to hate somewhere else. Move on

Hate? Hell no, I love. I especially love to drive a V8 with a stick. But my love cannot be fully expressed with a Super Big Gulp on board.

Re: Cupholder Idea?
ok - well - didn't mean to start a war. I could see how that might interfere with a manual car. Mine is auto, and that cupholder sure seems a HELLUVA lot better than trying to wedge it in the passengers seat! (and having it spill when you have to dodge some idiot!) I like to go long distance in mine, and having a cupholder just makes things so much nicer. I have one of the door ones too, but its seems kinda awkward and doesn't hold much. This one does look thick, i'll give you that, but i'm hoping its not too much in the way... I won't toss my old lid, which is perfectly fine.
Re: Cupholder Idea?
oh - one other thing - it says SPECIFICALLY in the desc of the item that it "will not interfere with console mounted controls" well, to me, it looks like it would cover up the window switches at least. As close as it looks in that picture to the shifter....

Re: Cupholder Idea?
What its saying is basically the window switches will still be useable, they'll just be right on the edge of it by the looks of it, Making them kind of annoying to use.
But I've never had one of those and i try not to bash products i don't have personal experience with

Why be that stuck up ******* that doesn't let his kid drink a soda in his car, you can always clean up a spilt beverage or donut crumbs.
Not to mention that your bmw and porsche most likely have leather, allowing a spilt beverage to be wiped up with little to no issues.

that first one is kind of cool, but those are some pretty expensive cars to be putting drinks in. I know I wouldn't put a cupholder in my 58 impala

Re: Cupholder Idea?
Been done by many, including myself. I ordered the cup inserts from ebay for the card tables, and used one of them. Only holds a can and not a bottle - but if theres a bottle there then i cannot hold the shifter, and i have to hold the shifter.
