Deluxe door panels-what should I use?

My 87 t/a has the ws6 door panels. I want to take out the fabric section then cut some plywood to fill in. Then cover it with a soft material like vinyl but very smooth. What kind of material should I use and where can I get it? Thanks.

Plywood is too thick, try masonite!

When you pattern it you can not go behind the armrest.

The problem you will run into is how to fasten it.
I did mine in this method and it turned out great.

I used a "spike strip" used in household upholstery and bent the tabs on the backside of the door panel

whatever you do I'd go on top of the existing fabric instead of taking it out. its never the same after you remove that fabric.

Re: Deluxe door panels-what should I use?

i dont have those doors so im not sure how they come apart, but if you can take the top off the door panel stretch some vynal fake leather - go to a cloth store and get a piece 54 inches wide and one yard deep, for about 8.00.
i would stretch it good and tight and use duct take to hold it on all the edges. no holes or anything. the stuff works very well - just make sure it does not show when you cover it with the cover that has the armrest portion.
the material is cheap, if you dont like the color you can just change it out.
sounds like a fun project.

i have heard of luan plywood being used . its used to re-skin interior household door panels . i have not used it , if i did i would make sure it was well sealed . i.e. , water seal , polyester resin , etc. . what ever you do post pics. & results good luck .

do you know if the doors come apart so that you can change the area he wants to change and then put them back together?
does anyone have a pic or the info?
if it does come apart he can use the one that is there and put a sheet of padding over it and then cover it.
or is it all one piece and there is no way to pull it apart.

The vinyl is stitched to the material, you'll have to take a razor blade and gently "trim" it out. The new material can be glued under the vinyl and the edges glued back with some sort of cement.

Instead of plywood use 1/8" water proof panel board, it's like a heavy cardboard material....very flexible.

Rod shops have been using it for years to make door panels and interior type panels. I use it on my car audio installs.
