Center console repair

The vinyl on the center console of my T/A is pulling apart. What should I use to put it back together? I realize this is a common problem and I searched but the search engine on this site is terrible. Thanks

Re: Center console repair

I just happen to be almost ready to attempt this same repair for '84 TA
console lid. Kinda have a plan, key items will be heat and gorilla glue .

The creative part will be gripping the edge of the vinyl to pull and stretch it
into place without ripping it while holding long enough for the glue to set.

I have an adjustable heat gun to soften the vinyl with, if I have luck I will post some pics, if not I'll tell you what doesnt work....

Re: Center console repair

Ive heard of other members using those large wooden clamps, that have the long threaded rods, that pull 2 pieces of wood towards the center, put gorilla glue, or similar between the vinyl, and plastic console frame, and clamp them down.

Ive never personally tried thos, but sounds like it could work.

Re: Center console repair

Go to the auto store, & get some 3m spray adhesive. It is similar to factory, & they have 3 strengths to choose from. gorilla is a good glue but in areas that are hard to keep in place you will just end up pulling your hair out. GG will also dry, & just be a huge lump of crap, so if you dont get it right the first time, you will have more fun removing the GG.

Re: Center console repair

The previous owner put liquid nails in to try and hold it together. It worked somewhat. Should I try and get it out before putting anything else in?

Oh wow. GG is more like liquid nail, so you see the trouble now before you have to learn the hard way, like I did. Yes try to get it off, if you can. If not you will have a build up of dry LN making it harder to adhere it.
