Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

Hello Camaro lovers,

I have searched everywhere for an aftermarket gauge cluster for a 90-92 Camaro, and no luck. So I'm making my own. I will show step by step of what/how I'm doing this.

I am modifying an stock gauge cluster from a 90-92 camaro. I took all the gauges, lights, and circuitry out of the white back plastic part of the cluster.

I traced the black middle plastic part of the cluster onto cardboard. I then cut and trimmed the cutout to fit in the face of the black plastic part. (I will later transfer this the cardboard cutout to a piece of Acrylic Sheet [plastic glass])

Going back to kindergarten! I got dimensions of the Autometer Gauges from Autometer.com and used a compass to draw out the size of the gauges. I took those to layout the gauges in cutout above.

I have yet to order the gauges, but hopefully next week I will have them and get things going. I'll keep post my progress.

Thanks.

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

More pics.

The Gauges I'm going with are The Autometer ES. The speedo and tach are 3 3/8'' and the oil, fuel, volt, and temp are 2 1/16''.

With the gauge template cutouts the blue is the hole that would need to be cut into the cluster, and the white is the bezel that goes around gauges.

And with using the stock gauge cluster I can use the clear plastic cover over the gauges.

This is how I am laying out my gauges.

On the back white plastic piece of the stock cluster, it will need to be cut to fit the depth of the gauges.

Something like this?
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...ry-gauges.html
Fitting the gauges in that space is tight, especially the bezels. The high beam indicator and directionals are from dennis kirk. They're for motorcycle dasboards. Not in the pic however are 2 red led's that I added for warning lights. One for low oil pressure and one for high engine temperature.

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

Hey everyone I just wanted to put some input in on the way I am doing mine. I bought a set of Cyberdyne digital gauges to put in it. What I did is removed the plastic trim around the gauges and put a piece of cardboard on the front and then fiberglassed behind it. I'm currently in the process of triming it down and when I get the chance I will lay a coat of fiberglass filler on it and sand it smooth then cut my wholes out and mount the gauges.

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

I'm gonna try the same thing. I just ordered a used cluster to hack apart. Please post more pics and progress reports. Also, can i wire up the gauges to the connector where the cluster plugs in to. Does anyone have a schematic showing what feeds what gauge? Can i just wire up using an electronic speedo to where the stock one gets its feed? What about the fuel gauge? 0-90 ohm?

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

most electric speedos from autometer can be connected to stock, you have to calibrate it by driving a certain known distance. fuel for most GM cars and for our camaro is 0-90 ohm. do you have a wiring diagram in your haynes, chilton, or autozone.com repair manual, i would think they'd have the cluster, if not search the board for the colors. you may want to run new sensors for water temp/oil pressure

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

lookin' good. very simliar to my second attempt at putting aftermarket gauges in this dash.

i hate to burst your bubble on one thing though: the thickness of the bezels on the autometers will not allow you to put the clear plastic back over them. you'll have to run without that part.

I got a low oil pressure switch( tee'd off the opsu on the back of the block) and high temp switch from autometer. Oil is on below 15 psi and temp light goes on over 200(I'm running a carb)

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

Greg from Covans classic dash is now in the process of finally making the custom panel for 90-92 Camaros to fit custom guages like Autometer after I begged him to and told him there was a market for it, call him @ 866-882-3525 he is making it in factory black matte, brushed aluminum, and Carbon Fiber. Spread the word please,

i'm glad to hear that! i'd love a better looking panel that allows for a more finished look. don't get me wrong, some of these look great, and mine isn't bad either, but the end result still looks home made.

Just looked at Covan's Classic Dash he isn't advertising anything yet for a third gen, but the stuff he has already is really expensive. 200 bucks for an undrilled blank panel.

as you stated, it is Pre 1990. That is fairly easy with the double hole dash. The flat plate adds to the degree of difficulty. If there was a custom panel, I would use it. I may post my own build once I am done with my pinto.

Re: Custom 1990 Dash For Autometer

no. and the ohm values for the gauges will likely not match your sending units for the factory gauges (except the fuel level gauge, get a 0-90ohm gauge and use the factory wiring).

most folks just run new wires, or better yet, get mechanical gauges with mechanical senders...much more accurate that way.

The electronic gauges I bought came with their own senders. Replace the senders with the new ones and use the same wires as stock. Keep the stock look and no one is the wiser. Mechanical is a PITA due to the need to run the lead from the block to the gauge (sender is in the gauge)

I am trying this too. I was thinking about fiberglassing around a stock one and mounting my dakota digital gauges. I am also toying with the idea of selling my digital tach and trying to see if magden would make me something

There are a few that are starting to be created, but the reason people are making their own is cause their isnt one. Im finishing mine as my spring break project. I have to get a dual guage pillar cause i can only fit 4 gauges on it

I did pretty much the same thing, only i didnt hack apart my stock cluster. I took a flat sheet, and made curved side panels and a top to mimic the clear plastic of the stocker and to fill in the gaps. and then just welded tabs for the stock mounting locations.

Bringing this one back from the dead. TwoBrakeTony, what does your finished product look like? I'm getting ready to do mine with Autometer Cobalt digital gauges on my 92. I'm concerned that all 6 gauges won't fit in the cluster. Speedo and Tach are 3 3/8" and all the others are 2 1/16".

If you are using theirs, check your sizes. The spedo and tach are 5", not 3-3/8.
