Difference between door panels

When I bought my car last month a pretty cool plus as part of buying it was that they guy I bought it from had alot of interior parts that were in much better shape than what was in it. So I went to go change the door panels... and they dont match. I have an 87 t/a and the door panel thats in it has a solid long hole where the armrest part attached through. the new door panel has 3 smaller holes and lacks a molded piece under the armrest. Are they from a different year? a camero? anyone make them work in a car like mine? Also, the body on the car is very straight and has no rust except where the paint got dinged in one place. I noticed that when I buckled up today that the seatbelt was wet. it has TTops and they dont leak as far as I can tell. Where would the water come from? any help would be awesome. Im new to fbodys and GM stuff and so far this car has been awesome its my daily driver but I want to take it back to a better quality.

Re: Difference between door panels

Door panels usually changed about once every 2-4 years. Without pics its going to be hard to tell you what they came out of. Also, being an 87 T/A your car may have the molded door panels, in which case just about all the hardware is going to be different then most other thirdgens.

BTW, if you have an 87 T/A with ttops, chances are they leak somewhere.

It sounds like you have standard door panals in your car and he gave you a set of deluxe door panals. Do the ones in the car seem flat? And the ones he gave you are "molded"under the armrest area?If so you will need the brackets that are mounted on the door from a car that had the deluxe panals.

Its actually the reverse of that the molded ones are in the car and the extra ones are the plain ones.

Re: Difference between door panels

i've never worked with the deluxe door panels but what i would do is go to a junk yard and take off a flat door panel and see what the difference is, I think you need new armrest and the brackets. keep everything together from your original door panels as they are somewhat hard to find

Trans Am Door Panel
Had no idea these were available -- and SO cheap too! I'm used to seeing $500+ per side for most cars that I've looked at new door panels for. I'll definitely be seeing you for a pair of those if I ever get this piece running.

Let me know if you guys ever start repro'ing door panels for 93-02 T/A's, I think it would be a very popular part if priced right since *EVERY* 2000-02 Firebird/Formula/TA I've seen has cracks in the plastic areas around the vinyl inserts due to a redesign flaw. Strangely, the 1993-99 panels never have this problem, even though they look identical when they're installed on the car. Last I checked GM wanted $600 per side for new ones.

Re: Difference between door panels

Knock off the metal brackets from your door, that use the current armrests & you'll be able to swap in the flat ones, but you'll need the different armrests that go with the flat panels.
