Manual Shifter PLate on Automatic.
Hey Everyone,
I had this idea for a while about just putting the manual shifter plate on my automatic and today I was really paying atention to that idea that i came accross some possibly issues but not sure. I was looking on the automatic the slider goes all the way to the bottom so when you drop it in 1st. So I was looking at the manual shifter plate and theres a wider or longer part on the plate itself would the shifter hit the plate when I drop it in 1st?
I was wondering about that and i'm not sure if anyone has done this mod or so.
Thanks. Tony.

Yeah....The factory beat you to it.
My 87 GTA came STOCK with a shift boot on an automatic. I don't know if Camaro ended up with the shifter further back or the shift boot futher forward, that would prevent the console tops from just being swapped out.

If you are talking about swapping the entire T5 console top over, I don't see why...Mine doesn't, unless it was DESIGNED that way & the Camaro shifter sits further back, but I doubt that..

You could cut your console top out & put in a boot. That is kinda how mine looks, since it has a mabual shift boot, yet there is a slider indicator next it, that (is supposed to) light up & show which gear I'm in.
The bulb is out & I've never cared enough to put a new bulb in it.

Re: Manual Shifter PLate on Automatic.
I tried that when I went t56 not long ago. It looked silly, partially because the opening was too long. There also was no good way of mounting a boot so that it would look somewhat original.
Swapping the whole shift plate should work... how often do you actually drop the shifter down into first anyway?

I still have my modified (cut) auto shift plate that I can take pictures of. The leather boot I got from a Volvo did not fit the opening very well, so I just bought the correct manual shifter plate.

Re: Manual Shifter PLate on Automatic.
Well, i was trying to do the opposite as you. I wanted to modify the automatic plate to use with the t56. I cut out enough to completely remove the slot for the auto shifter, this made the opening look a little funky. A stock manual shift plate would likely not provide enough clearance to drop it down in first gear.

I bet you could swap in a T5 with that shifter plate and it wouldn't hit.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Actually I'm not sure if it would hit or not. Best way to find out is to take the plunge and try it out. If it doesn't quite work you can probably unbolt the shifter from the floor and move it forward a little bit.

I see the idea here of wanting your auto to look like a stick when others happen to look in and see it, but what about your shifter handle with that big handle with the push button on the side to be able to shift, arent there gunna be people thats gunna see that and wonder why he wanted it to look like a stick? although maybe you have an aftermarket shifter so I can be wrong, just looking at the posible things many people will see and notice about the idea.

Re: Manual Shifter PLate on Automatic.
The shifter would likely need relocated to the left also, otherwise it would be way to the right in the boot. Here's the shift plate that I cut for use with a t56, and one with a stock opening. I also cut the opening a little further to the left to provide shifter clearance.

A stock manual shift plate has an opening that is wider, MUCH shorter, and moved up a little closer to the ash tray.

Also, if your going for the manual look, you will need a dummy clutch pedal
