Re: LED Dash lights
1992 Camaro, T10 - 194 L.E.D.'s Size:: 22mm x 11mm
Qty 10 $5.00 built in resistor.
Got them off Ebay CHEAP from this seller
LINK
I took a screwdriver and pushed out the old lamp from the socket.
Then removed the remaining wire with a small straight screwdriver.
Pointed the leads straight out, and put the L.E.D. into the stock socket.
Next Folded the leads down onto the stock holder, And soldered them into place.
Getting the polarity figured out was fairly simple, ( small lead is the + side )
If you install them backwards, They will not emit light, (Simply remove and turn 90*)
Leave dash loose till you verify all are on, and turn the ones that don't.

Re: LED Dash lights
Thank you for replying!
I have already looked for myself, though. Also, I did install bright white LEDs. Originally I was planning on doing a nice red color by installing some kind of film but when I looked at the pure white, I got hooked.
I love how the different colors stand out. I mean with the stock orange you can't really tell they're there.
I only got a picture of when I was in the middle of installing them. Some didn't light up on first try, so there are some dark areas.
(also, they appear a lot brighter if seen in person)

Re: LED Dash lights
ok i just got my led lights. they are yellow 194's. Ok so i installed them last night and went out for a drive, i can barely see the gauges. Now i have read to either paint the back white gloss/ metallic or put aluminum foil over the back of the metal faceplate that goes over the gauges.
how do you secure the aluminum foil? or is it easier to just spray paint it? also, my dimmer switch will not dim anything. it will either go all the way on, or completely off. I just replaced it because my old one was doing the same thing. Any ways to fix this?
I would really appreciate help with this because it was very discouraging last night when i turned the lights on and it barely lit the dash up.
thanks

Re: LED Dash lights
I've got an updated picture of mine. Not a whole lot of difference, maybe a bit truer red now that I've painted the back of the metal bezel a flat white. I've also painted the front of the bezel red to match the car.
Pay no attention to the dirty interior (work in progress )
And the lighted gauges...

Re: LED Dash lights
Not really true.
The bulbs posted by spoolingturbo6 (assuming, they are the same as mine. Mine are from a different brand but they look absolutely identical) do work with the dimmer.
I have them, installed them and the dimmer works just like it does with regular bulbs.

Re: LED Dash lights
I bought them in one of their shops: http://www.atu.de/pages/shop/home.html
Unfortunately, I couldn't find them on their website. I'm sure they don't produce the bulbs themselves but they sell it under the ATU brand. I still have the box they came in. I'll see if it says something about who produces the bulbs.
If it doesn't I could ask directly. You should know that they're pretty expensive. It's about 12€ (about $15) for two bulbs. As my Firebird needs 9 bulbs for the gauges I had one to spare which I used to replace the one that lights the license plate. (love that look)

Which did you put in the dash, 1 diode or 4 diode leds?

Re: LED Dash lights
I put LED bulbs in my cluster a few months ago and they all went out on me.
First they started to flash on and off on the oil press side and worked its way towards the speedo, eventually all of them going out or just flashing.
They looked great when they worked, just like TheFabs's car.
I must have gotten a bad batch or they didn't like the heat cycling since I had them in there over the winter and it got pretty cold here.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't realize some of the bulbs would work with the stock dimmer.

Re: LED Dash lights
So I just finished this LED Dash light mod in my 91 Camaro, thought I'd share my findings..
Firstly, I am unhappy with the results and will be redoing it again in the future. I used Blue 194 mini wedge bulbs from Superbrightleds.com (WLED-B4-32). The bulbs themselves are great, I just chose the wrong ones I guess.
My gauge cluster (assuming all 90-92 will be the same) only takes 4 bulbs to light all the gauges. I purchased the 30 degree bulbs (angle of light) which was a BAD choice... DEFINITELY go with the 90 degree bulbs if you are doing this mod. With the bulbs I purchased, the needles are really bright, but the digits on the gauges and the rest of the gauge in general and super dim and barely readable at night.
I should also note that I did not modify my cluster in any way. I did not paint or foil the inside of the cluster, it still has the stock gauge overlays, everything is completely stock except the 4 Blue LED bulbs to light the cluster.

I guess you could always try painting/foil and see what your results are before doing anything else? Give it a shot and see if that helps.. then again - if you're tearing things apart, maybe you should just try a different bulb AND paint/foil while you've got everything out again.

I also ordered 4 of the 5xLED bulbs with a 220 degree angle to see how those work, as well as 4 of the same bulbs I originally order but in 90 degree this time.
When I do the foil/painting, where and what exactly should I be foiling? Does anyone have some pictures? I'm assuming I just foil the entire inside of the cluster behind the gauges, basically where the bulbs will sit and emit light.

Re: LED Dash lights
I am looking to install LEDs in my 84 TA 3rd Gen dash. I am counting 9 that I need (not including turn signals and brights). The back of my gauge housing is white, but kind of dingy so I'll probably paint it white. Also, the back of my bezel has been spray painted orange (I think by the factory) just like under the P N R O D 2 3 indicator. So both of those reflect orange. I tried covering the orange with foil pretty quickly and didn't cover all areas 100%. This really improved the brightness of the gauges at night although they did still have a slight orange glow. I would suggest the spray paint unless you do a really detailed job with the foil. My plan is the fill the gauges with purple (UV blacklight) LEDs to replace the stock. Does anyone have any advice on if this will work well or not? The UV is the dimmest of all the LED colors so I was planning on using all 4X LEDs. I figured that would blast enough light out no matter what color, but wanted to see if anyone had any advice on whether or not it will be enough. Anyone have any experience with these bulbs?!
Update: I am also just realizing that the back of the actual gauges are fluoro orange too! I'm suspecting that these need to be painted or covered as well in order to eliminate the orange completely as orange +purple = ugly brown. Anyone have any words of wisdom on this? Good idea? Bad idea?!

Re: LED Dash lights
Like i said in post #11, you need to use 90 degrees to get a good spread, and always use 4 or more diodes. One diode is NOT enough. Especially in your case, where you only had 4 sockets.

Re: LED Dash lights
Hey guys, a few more quick questions...
Do the gauges in a '91 have any sort of light filter that needs to be removed when changing to a colored LED bulb?
Also, I purchased 4 of these twist in sockets, T10S-TW, from superbrightleds.com to install my bulbs this time. Anyone ever used these sockets? Do they fit right into the cluster?

and to be honest I dont get why you bought them.
you just had to take out that socked, take the bulb out of the socket, and put the new led bulb into the socket.
#142
Re: LED Dash lights
Maybe my bulbs are aftermarket or something then because the sockets that are in my cluster are a little bit different... They do not have the proper contact points for the bulbs.
When I replaced my bulbs the first time, I had to break the contact wires on the original bulbs in the sockets because they were soldiered to the contact points on the sockets, and when I inserted the bulbs from superbrightleds (mini wedge 194 bulbs) the wires on the bulbs did not touch the contacts on the sockets, so I had to bend the wires on the bulbs and then soldier them to the contacts on the socket...
I'm going to take extensive pictures when I swap the bulbs again in a few days. I'll post them when I've finished.
