I have an 85 Firebird with a V8. And I was pulling apart my dash to replace a few of the burned out bulbs. I pulled the gauge face off the far right cluster (Temp and Fuel I think) and replaced the bulb behind it no problem. Then I started in on the speedo thinking it would come off the same, wrong. I undid the face of the speedo cluster with a flat head screw driver and when I pulled it off there was a spring holding the needle in place that was stretched out. After messing with it for two hours trying to fix it and said screw it and decided to find one to replace it with. Can i use just any speedo cluster? What about My Mileage? (My car only has 81k) Will it matter if its off a v6 or v8 car? Or even year of car? Please help as I have no speedometer -_-

 

i think '85 speedo is a 1 year only item if you want one
exactly the same,'86 base cluster might also have same
speedo as '85-for '86 full gauge clusters,GM went with a
nippondenso built,red-orange backlit cluster.
Any '82-85/base '86 speedo should fit and work AFAIK,
but there are differences in the graphics and lighting-
'82-most 83 are blue painted behind,while '84-85 and
'83 DT500 are orange behind.If you are VERY careful,
you might be able to fix your original using parts from
a spare '82-85 speedo.
