85 speedometer or cluster swap

85 speedometer or cluster swap

i have an 85 trans am with the 85mph speedometer. i got an electric 140mph cluster out of a car at the swap meet. will this all plug into play and should i put the whole cluster in or should i just put the speedometer into my original cluster?

Welcome to TGO. Your 85 speedo, I believe, will be cable driven, so the swap would not be plug and play.

IIRC, in later models with electric speedos, the ECM was involved along with a buffer box--as well as a tail-mounted VSS. You don't say if the old cluster is equipped with idiot lights, but if it is, that would further complicate a swap. You might consider a search. Perhaps someone has direct experience with such a swap.
